Hey. Is anyone out there having issues with the front callipers seizing. I have replaced three so far in the last 20 thousand kilometres. It beginning to get annoying and I can't figure out why. Are these trucks known for this problem ? It's a 06 Taco 4wd TRD. Thanks. !

Where are buying calipers from? If your buying them remaned (which I assume you are), you might want to try to buy them from a different store. My father ran into this, when he bought a remaned caliper, it was frozen as soon we put it on the truck!

Are you in an area that uses a lot of salt on the roads in the wintertime? This is a common problem when salt is used. The salt gets into the sliding mechanisms and causes them to seize.

either way, the salt thing is not acceptable, non of my other vehicles have succumbed to seizing due to road salt. logical, but not acceptable, otherwise this would happen to all types of vehicles in northern areas.

You have moisture in the fluid. It is rusting the freshly machined bores, and then they lock up. My Celica had this problem many years ago.

You need to flush the brake fluid completely. Use new fluid, and pump at least a quart through the system until it comes out clean and clear. Then reinstall the calipers and bleed as normal.

That's a great point on why they keep seizing up! I should do the same, as I have no idea how old the brake fluid is in my truck .

It isn't the salt. The Calipers are fixed, the only moving parts are the pistons which have seals on them. I will agree with the poster above he more than likely has water in the brake fluid causing the Caliper bore to rust locking the piston in the extended position.

I used to live on the west coast years ago where they don't use salt on the roads. I NEVER had problems with disc brake calipers seizing. When I moved to Ohio, I had to disassemble my brakes yearly to combat the seizing issue. I understand that it's unacceptable, but it's a fact of life. I'm not sure other makes are any better...

Are you sure that the calipers are seizing? It could be worn out brake hoses. A brake hose will frey on the inside and act like a one way valve. When you step on the brakes it puts pressure to the caliper. With worn out hoses when you let off the brakes it holds pressure in the caliper by not letting brake fluid return back to the master cylinder. Easy way to check is when your caliper is seized open up the bleeder. If brake fluid spurts out under pressure you probably need a new hose. If it just drips then its your caliper. Hope this helps.

how can you tell if your caliper is seized? does it clunk after you accelerate from a stoplight or something of that nature?

They will drag the pads on the rotor. You may feel it pull or you may not. It may just be enough to cause uneven wear on the pads from side to side.

What I found was I got a steering wheel "wobble" when applying the brakes....!!

The last one was REAL bad... (could not stop in a good distance because of that wobble....)... the steering wheel would almost come out of my hands...!!!

THis time..I new what the issue is and got it quick...

    Another sticking F'n Caliper....

    WHY...????

I have NO idea why our trucks are plagued with this... Might be something to do with the spray from the tires (in salt country..??))...

    Crappy Toyota design...????

Of all the horror stories I hear of the frozen areas and salt / chemicals that get sprayed on the roads I am glad I don't live there...

I think I'll move to SC... so my calipers won't seize up like they do here...!!

Just kiddin' man... A caliper or there is no big deal when ya get to drive such an awesome truck, eh..????

Let's face it... anything mechanical WILL F'up sooner or later.... the way YOU treat it and how much love you give it WILL make a difference...

The "learning" what has to be done on our Tacos is very important so we can address isues BEFORE they happen,,, I think.

Great truck... Just give it some love..!!
