    ALL KINDS OF SHIT
    -Tool Box (in bed)
    -Tool Kit
    -First Aid Kit/Survival Supplies
    -Tire Repair Kit
    -Jumpers
    -Rope!, Straps, Tie Downs, Bungees
    -Axe
-Hi-Lift with winching supplies and/or winch
-I keep a cooler in my truck at all times. Not a necessity but nice to have.
    -Quality GPS!

-Good quality, reliable tires are essential
-Depending on where you plan to go and what you plan to do is how you would have to base your mods.
-Good quality suspension parts whether lifting or not.
-I think at least an armored up front bumper, possible rear, possible sliders and skids. Again this depends on how serious you plan to get.
-Good Lighting! Not just for the road ahead but also so you can see to work around the truck.
-Good Protection on the Inside isnt a necessity but it sure makes it nice. Weather Guard mats, some type of seat cover.

*The main thing is good quality parts, good maintenance schedule and routine so that you know the truck wont let you down!*

    -Shit Paper

Dont know what direction you really wanted to go but these are the things that i do with my truck and that i carry in my truck on a daily basis for work, play, and every day use. Go prepared.

Pretty much this, which is gone into in more detail above.

I'm one of those prepared for anything kinda guys, or at least I try to be, I keep A LOT of stuff in the truck and I'm still missing some essentials. I'll be following this thread to get some ideas.

All around like you go to work then off roading after work then there's a flood somewhere and you try to help people or go out hunting and fishing or camping. Or even a post apocalyptic zombie scenario...you know, Typical stuff. I do like the TP idea, that going in ASAP

Heres what i say-- Good lighting (like aux lights for working around the truck/saving peoples lives in the dark), leveling kit and big offroad tires so you dont get stuck, killer stereo, maybe a winch and sliders if you get that crazy (i just keep a good tow strap handy), backup camera so you dont look like an idiot hooking up to stuff, and thats about it.

I too try to create a vessel that will take me anywhere when i build my trucks (within reason). Functional add on's instead of blingy bullshit. it's the way it should be....

just get a Pinzgauer 6 wheel if you feel a need to be a hero. it'll do more than anything you can make a Tacoma do

it'll cost less than trying to kit out a Tacoma to be a Pinzgauer

Don't forget to throw a cheap .22lr rifle in the truck. Never know when something will need to be shot.

    Not enough...
I was just thinking about this couple of days ago. In a span of 1 week, I had to help jump starting 4 different cars either parked in awkward positions or access to them blocked by something. My X3 (going away soon) has the battery in the back, but also has terminals under the hood, which made things a little easier. My $5 6' jumper cables purchased at a gas station few years ago were another story, however....

I used to drive a tow truck many years ago, and every single truck was equipped with a 30' heavy duty jumper cables and terminals on front and rear bumpers for connecting those cables, without having to open the hood. I am starting to think that something like that would be a good thing to have on a truck. Perhaps an off-road bumper with an extra cut-out and mounting brackets for one of those terminals....

Here is example of what I'm talking about. Rather expensive, however.

    Cheaper alternative:

Can still be mounted under the hood, but with easier access

I was thinking of doing that with my winch cables. That way the winch can be unpluged most of the time, and it would make removing the bumper easier. It would also allow me to plug in a set of HD jumper cables. Just hack one end off and install the connector.

SHOVEL you'll get more use out of it than you think. Small stuffed Teddy Bear in the glove box---if you are ever unfortunate to come onto a horrendous/tragic accident with a small child wailing it will be one of the best things you have. Been there Done that.

Smart move. And for survival you could use the inside as kindling for fire
