Got the rack rails drilled & mounted. Gotta figure out the cross rails now...



I've been battling my tire gate getting more and more difficult to open. The spindle CBI uses has oil impregnated brass bushings and over time it's gotten pretty stiff.

So I took it completely apart. Words cannot express how difficult it was to do that.
Here's the gate on my workbench:


Drilled & tapped threads:


New zerk:


Now to reinstall it and pack it full of grease till it pukes.

Truck looks weird without the tiregate...



I got the spindle all cleaned up - it had corroded a bit inside so I took some 600grit paper to it then greased it like a stuck pig.

Now that everything's cleaned up it was much easier to get the gate back on. I'm happy to report that it's functioning 100% again with a zerk and packed full of Mobile 1 synthetic grease.



One of my favorite features of the CBI swingout is that when it opens the stop pin will lock it open at 90*. You can then lift the pin and open it to a full 180*
It's now back to it's original functionality.

I also snuck underneath & hit the driveshaft w/ the grease gun while I was at it.

 

Thats what i though of when i saw that grease fitting you installed, I only recently found out about the "PROPELLER SHAFT" greasing. Where i come from, its a got damn DRIVE shaft! Glad you lubed it to. *End rant* i bet its MUCH easier to get to them on your truck

Mine u-joints were squeaking when i found out they needed greased...is that bad?

 

It's good to lube it often - I've nuked my u joints a few times.

 

I've only seen them "nuked" from people dig racing (racing from a stop) to hard. Replaced many a u-joint on the tailgate

The grease that came out when lubed mine at 37k made me wonder if it had ever been done, it was all black and cooked to death. Smelled wretched! Its all clean now

 

I see your swing out stop pin is bent too.. I ended up having to put a washer under the ball to space the pin up a little bit.

 

Yeah - I disassembled it & dunked it in PB blast. Still bent but works fine.
