Much easier time on the other 60° positioned it so it was almost a horizontal weld. Bumper done sub frame is next[IMG]

A project I completed the other weekend, managed to jam 12" shocks under the bed. Welding underneath there sucked LOL

welded my sliders on for my very first welding project. first time using shield gas as well. im happy with all my vertical welds but had a hard time with the upside down welds for the bottom of the frame plates. im sure i was doing something wroong but dont know what and hopefully you guys could steer me in the right direction for the future. when i was doing the upside down welds the sizzling would go away and the weld would drip and not pool right. there would also be a small flame and the weld would run down into the tip of the gun nozzle.

    surprisingly the held!

example of one of the upside down welds that didn't go so well. yes i got pissed and didnt finish the weld until after the pic.

Any suggestions for what plate to patch the bed with in my 2003? There's a hole about the size of a quarter, but I'm guessing I need to put around 2"x5" in it.

I would suggest cutting out as much rot as you can, hit it with a rapid strip or wire wheel to remove rust/paint. It'll make it easier to determine where the rot ends, hit it with a hammer, anywhere not solid cut out.

That's the plan, but I'm just trying to determine what size thickness I should patch it with?

Hey guys, someone mentioned that when welding on a truck I could risk frying electrical components. Any input on that? I'm thinking grounding to the bed and welding on the bed won't be much of an issue, especially seeing some of the stuff people fab up on here! (great work guys).

just disconnect the negative cable from the battery before welding and you should be fine

Thanks. Im pretty happy with how my welds look, except for my upside down ones, for being very new to welding. Yours look night and day better than mine so i will try that next time i have to do one. Thanks for the tip!

Sub frame started. Angles were kinda trial and error but bout got it down now. Notched out bottom leg of channel and sub frame will slide right in and weld right up. Getting real close[IMG][IMG]

For angles you can make a simple angle finder with two pieces of thin wood or metal bolted together.
