Damn, just looked at his current price. I don't think I paid anywhere near that, got in on one of the first group buys.

That skid you linked to only covers the back, not the bottom or the drain plug. Keep that in mind.

I did see that but from what I'm also reading is that the bottom is well trussed and thick already. t's only the rear that is the really weak point. Worse comes to worse is more plate can be welded to the very bottom of the diff too I suppose right?

I'd follow him again in a heart beat that was the best rausch trip I've been on. I have a few screws loose myself though.

I know exactly what your saying but I ment this part, the mounts for the lca.

I bead of weld around the diff drain ring will fix that issue.

1/4".?. clearance loss? Lurry said 3/4". It's made from 1/4" steel so I guess it is a tight fit?

Rear diff is easily protected and strengthened by welding on a rear truss. Benefits are Zero loss in clearance, additional axle strength, no collection of salt/mud/sand, and at least half the cost.

I'm still not sold on them. Especially the shitty way they fit and clamp to the axle. If you do back up into a rock with enough force to crack the back of the diff...where is that force now directed? Yep...it's concentrated into the axle tubes. IMHO it's a bad design overall and just another piece of bolt on expensive bling.

You could do far better for far less money and get way more benefits.

The only reason I ever got them was to have them welded to the LCA to strengthen it. I never got around to it and ended up selling the other front wheel gussets to Craig I had when I was planning on toughening up the whole front end. I would agree if they are not welded like Total Chaos intended. They are basically useless if not welding them and only would really stop a rock from shooting up and getting the truck stuck 'if' a rock was able to get into the huge gap of the LCA....which has happened to Colin at RC.

    I'm not touching that one...

This is similar to what is needed for minimal cost and max benefit. The rest are crap IMO.

could be... just google "axle truss"

Of the guys I know that have done them this is the style they go with......and yes that's a old Yota front axle....and it costs $140 for the kit.

or like others have shown you could buy the non-truss version for $40.

Yeah, I would say tack a plate on the bottom so you have a layer that's getting scraped up and rusting rather than the diff housing.

I think I'd rather have a cap of some sort. So the inside is protected too. If the inside of the ring or the plug get banged up it's a pain in the ass.

I prefer not backing up unless I have a good idea of what's behind me.

Them diff housings are super thick and gusseted. I was amazed when I took my third off. Toyota has been using pretty much the same axle design for a very long time and the reason behind that is it works and is strong. I guess if I was bouncing my truck off rocks and backing into boulders I may want some rear diff protection, but I don't drive like that.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Can't you get the service records for before you bought it? You're one more trip away from it being a lemon....even though I'm sure the dealer is smart enough to write it up as different problems each time so that does not apply.
