Who's Pulling Who?

Hi all,

I made a post in the towing section asking for help with travel trailer selections, then made an edit realizing that for my budget, I can get many types of RV. Now I've made another realization that, in my brain anyway, warrants another thread. Apologies if it doesn't; I expect to be promptly shot at dawn.

Q: Is towing the Tacoma behind an RV a viable option or is that only possible in the realm of the 1%?

Taco can't be flat towed that I'm aware of. We don't have the neutral for the transfer case like the 1st gens did.

 

if its on a trailer, 4wd or 2wd.

 

^^correct. He has a 4x4.

 

If I'm readin the replies correctly, I have to put the whole truck up in a trailer behind the RV. Would one of the "Car Dolly" type things work? Wasn't sure if your reply included car dollies as a type of trailer.

It appears to be a "maybe". Take a look at www.remcoindustries.com - drive-shaft disconnect and a lube pump if automatic.

If I am reading correctly, I can tow her with a car dolly or a full trailer without modification, but if I want to tow her with all four wheels on the ground, I need a drive shaft coupling disconnect. Is this correct?

If on a dolly, you still need to disconnect the rear driveline. On a trailer, you don't need to do anything to the truck.

You can get a disconnect, pull the rear u-joint an tie up the driveline, or remove the driveline and put it in the truck.

 

I may be wrong, but i believe you can just disconnect the drive shaft anf be fine. Throw it in the bed.

 

you probably need to mark transfer case, u-joints, and rear axle so drive shaft remains in balance after remounting.

 

Ok so it's probably going to cost more than I can be comfortable with to do a motorhome with a tow behind setup for the truck. Between the cost of either a trailer or modifications and Colorado's cost to register RV's, I think I might be downgrading the motor home option for now. I could probably get a decent deal on a 90's model Winnebago, but it's not just the cost of the motorhome itself to worry about. Hmm, much to ponder.

 

Naw you can pull out both front and rear drive shafts off their flanges without messing with driveline phasing.

8 bolts for the front shaft

8 bolts and 2 center carrier bolts for the rear and shes free wheeling at that point.

 

I went out on my break and peeked under the truck. Seems like they'd be a bit difficult to remove at first, but putting it back on shouldn't be as bad.

Question: Do both front and rear shafts have to be removed to tow behind or just the rear? If I remove just the rear, would I use a car dolly and keep the front elevated?

Also, how well does this procedure go in actual practice when you pull into a campground? Lets say the car dolly options is viable and I pull into a campground, drop the truck and drive it out of the way using 4H or 4L. Is that viable?

Why would you have to remove the front? Doesn't the front driveshaft disconnect in 2wd?

Certainly if you're using a dolly you could leave the front alone.

 

I don't think it applies to manual trannies...

I'm under the impression that would only need to be done with an automatic transmission.
