I am excited. I will have my lift by then. Hopefully I won't hit a rock and bounce back like I did last year. It was hard getting my momentum back again. Prerunner problems.

Its mostly a graded flat dirt road. The tough section is only a few miles long and still prerunner friendly

Yeah my lower control arm mount has a crack in it. Should be fixed next weekend and I should have flat belly skids again before this. Not really worried though

Well, my early Christmas gift came in. Mr. Keepers got ahold of a nv231d transfer case to go into the WJ. Since my NV242hd was about to grenade.
After a bunch of research we decided that it would be an easy straight forward swap.
    We were wrong.....
We had to split both cases, remove the longer input shaft from the 242 and swap it into the 231d.
Luckily the 4lo planetary, which is permanently attached to the input happened to be the correct ratio and pitch for the helical gears.
And, luckily my SYE from the 242 was able to swap over to the 231.
As a bonus, the 242hd's chain is beefy as hell to handle extra torque, but the
Chain in the 231hd is friggin massive!!!!!! This is one bad ass transfer case!!!
Once again, thanks Andrew for an awesome gift and your knowledge. :)

In other words, adapting a T-case from one jeep to another was a bit of a PITA.

His old case is a 242, which has an AWD setting. These are troublesome (and pieces of shit in my opinion). They tend to self-engage into AWD, or get stuck in AWD while shifting from 2WD to 4HI/LO. They're also notorious for spontaneously self-destructing.

It should be noted, that technically, this swap was a downgrade, but because of above mentioned issues, is more than worth it, as it will be much less maintenance.

This is the new T-case, designated 231. Only real difference from a 242 is lack of an AWD setting (although this one is a heavy duty type for V8 use, as opposed to what's in my two jeeps, which are "standard duty" 231 for 4 and 6cyl engines). Pretty common case. As mentioned, both my jeeps have 231s, and they're trouble free as long as you keep up on maintenance. Best part is you can crawlbox these for just over $1K.

The only problem was, his original case (242) had a longer input shaft than the 231. Without this longer shaft, the rear trans seal would not seat and would leak all the fluid out while driving. So, going on blind luck, we disassembled both cases in hopes that the inputs would be interchangeable, which luckily they were :) This is how my driveway looked for several hours:

At this point we discovered that the new 231 had a much heavier duty front drive chain than the 242, oddly enough.. Better to handle that stroked 4.7L! 231 chain on left and 242 on right:

Luckily, the front input, as well as the low range reduction assembly, were completely interchangeable between the two cases, even sharing common Chrysler factory part #s. God I love the interchangeability of Jeep parts :D

While we had the new case apart, we took the time to double check the internals for wear and clean out the case with brake cleaner, then reassembled.

Now, all that was left was to modify the rear driveshaft stub to accept Derricks upgraded CV driveshaft mod from the old case. Check out this big hard shaft ;)

We measured and cut down it's length to a required 4 inches:

(Yes, I know, no eye protection...)

Double-checked for flatness of cut with this handy-dandy tool:

Drilled/tapped dead center for a 3/8" coarse thread bolt:

And the end result, with the old yoke added to the new case rear output.
