I ask because I took my truck in for an oil change at the dealership today and according to the invoice 5w20 was used instead of 5w30. Whether the Tech used the wrong oil or the service rep typo'd the invoice, is unknown. Will it damage the engine to run 5w20 for 5k miles?

I plan to start doing my own oil changes, but I have to go buy all the required tools first.

You'll be fine, do you live in a colder climate? You could use 5w-20 for all your changes.

Nope. I live in the hot, humid southeast.

Chances are, it'd be ok, as long as you're not running it hard. Like hauling or constant high speeds.

My first oil change I did on my truck I accidentally used 5W-20. My dad said he'd pick up the oil for me while he was out, since I was using his garage to change it. He grabbed that instead of 30 and I didn't even look at the bottle since I told him what I needed and I assumed. I just poured it on in. Then I got home and he called and told me the mistake. :homer: :cookiemonster: . But me being paranoid, I ran out, grabbed 30, drained the 20 and put the 30 in. I just knew it would bother me in the long run, so I just changed it.

Me personally, in a hot climate, and a lot of highway driving. I'd either check with the dealer or change it out myself.

Specialy with dino oil and 5000 mile change intervals.

The 2tr-fe (4 cyl.) was designed to use 5w-30, and now uses 0w-20 with no changes in design. You should be fine.

It's oil, stop being crazy and drive the truck. It's not like they put ATF in your motor. Oil is oil

If you believe in science, and I do, bob is the oil guy and blackstone labs pretty much agree that if you change your oil regularly, whether you use dino or synthetic, you'll be fine.

The key is that your engine has the proper lubrication, meaning you change the oil often enough to maintain the correct viscosity.

What exactly would you like me to tell him? It's oil, it works, it black and he has it in his truck. Do you want a link to oil viscosity and why it's basically all the same?

It just pisses me off that it happened, thats all. Even if the Service manager specified the wrong weight the actual tech should've caught it and at least asked for clarification. I did read the linked article and it set my mind at ease.

Supposedly, the dealership doesn't stock 5w30 any longer and it has to be delivered from a local parts store. The tech said that he hadn't seen a vehicle call for 5w30 in a while.

While its probably true that most all of Toyota's new vehicles specify 5w20, they should not forget about all the vehicles they sold in the recent past that did call for 5w30. Unless Toyota issued a TSB stating 5w20 is approved for use in all vehicles previously requiring 30, then they should stick to the manual, not what they deem good enough.

My next oil change is free, but I'll probably have everything I need to do it myself by then.

Would you like a link on how to properly spell Eric with a C?

I just had service on my 14 V6 and the dealership did 5W30 per owners manual.

They've got all kinds of 5w-30 at the dealership. See the PDF below. look under Tacoma 1gr-FE. They have gobs of it.
Print this off and take it to them and ask them if they need some more copies of it to distribute to the techs.

    I don't know I don't design engines for a living.

If they told you this >>>>>>"Supposedly, the dealership doesn't stock 5w30 any longer and it has to be delivered from a local parts store. The tech said that he hadn't seen a vehicle call for 5w30 in a while."

I'd say they were not being entirely honest with you. If they can't be honest about an oil change then what's up with the rest of their service.
