I have a newbie question. Sorry for my stupidity. I have an 08 prerunner off road. I din't drain fluid into container so I'm not sure exactly how much fluid came out. I put in three qts as stated in manual. It worked fine until recently. While driving on the freeway at 55, it wouldn't shift into 4th or OD. RPM's was at 2600. Any suggestions?

    Yes.

No, that's what I did, but you just want to use that as a baseline. You still need to check the level with the dipstick.

Check it while running. Follow the procedure in the owners manual.

For anyone scratching his head, we're talking about the 4 cyl here.

You should have an AT light it just doesn't show when you turn the ignition key to the on position it only shows it when you put the system in transmission temperature mode, My prerunner is the same. You check the fluid while idling in park and at the AT correct temperature. And you have to shift through the gears pretty quick to put the system in temperature mode, not pause for a half second like it says on the video. Takes a few practices runs to get it into temperature mode. Good luck man

I am planning a 9 qt drain and fill (3 qts 3 times)
Can anyone tell me how long it takes for the new fluid (3qts) to cycle out of the pan, I was told 30 seconds of engine running
After 3 d/f's I have 1 addl qt to add before putting in checking temp mode
    Thx

No, it takes about 6-7 seconds for 2.5 quarts to flush out as the engine is at idle. Get you a clear painters bucket from homedepot that already has the marking for quarts only a few bucks. fallow the instructions to the " T" and you won't go wrong, except the temperature mode on mine I had to shift through the gears pretty quick in order to get the system in AT temperature mode. Never let the fluid pump to run dry so you only flush 2.5, you need to turn engine off as soon as you see the 2.3 mark on the bucket. Easy process you just have to pay attention to detail.

newbie question, once the procedure is completed and the AT fluid is at correct level, is it necessary to disconnect positive terminal to "exit" AT temperature mode? Thanks.

I don't think so, you just turn key to off position and remove the OBD2 jumper and your good to go......

I assume I can replace the AT filter easily after draining the pan (but did not see this in the thread)?

I'm really interested in hearing good alternatives... and if T-IV is also a problem.

Like I said there, the Dex-VI issue bugged me, but since I had the Allison trans, I just went with the Allison recommended fluid.

Newb question here, but why can't you drain the fluid, then just refill until it starts to trickle out of overflow?

Temperature is important. Fluid expands and contracts a lot with temperature... look at your power steering fluid level cold then hot.

This was a helpful post. Had to replace the transmission fluid after the overflow plug fell out on the highway. Wasn't sure how to check the temp. thanks

Was skeptical at first, and you have to switch from neutral to drive faster than you think, but it worked like a charm. I would suggest practicing entering the AT Temp Check Mode a few times before you drain as it took me about three attempts to get it. On a 90 degree day here in SC it only took about 5-7 minutes before the light was on to check the overfill plug. Great write up, follow you it to the letter and you wont mess anything up. I bought my 2007 used with about 77K on it and just recently came to realize that the damn tranny oil had never been changed. Fluid looked dirty but didnt smell burnt and there were no metal shavings or any chunks of metal besides the normal amount on the magnets. Also changed out fluid on both diffs and the transfer case as well. Truck is smooth as silk and the hard shifts I was feeling before are completely gone with smooth power applied all the way through the range of gears when deep in the pedal.

If you buy a scangauge and use its trans temp reading, I assume you can skip the jumpers and speed shifting, correct?
