I purchased the PL5400 about 3 months ago for my tailgate and it stopped locking when I turn the key. My tailgate has only been locked about 10 times since I bought the 5400 so I am not a heavy user.

One thing I noticed after installation was how little movement of the key turn was required to actuate the lock...maybe an 1/8" to 1/4" turn.

Am thinking of contacting customer service at Pop and Lock and see if there are known issues and/or if I can return this item under warranty.

Any similar experiences or thoughts on this problem?

My required about the same about of turn. I hated mine and took it off, just felt cheap and I'm much happier with the stock handle.

I have the 5500, which is basically an updated version of the 5400, and the one I initially received wouldn't lock at all. PL customer service is very good and they sent me a new lock with a week. I'm not sure what the warranty time period is, but it can't hurt to contact them. 3 months isn't very long.

By any chance did you use any other key beside the original ?
You can't do that. Disables the lock.

No...I've used the exact same key since installation.

    ????

You mean if I accidentally try to lock/unlock my gate with the key from my wife's Rav4... or if some asshole tries to use another Toyota key to unlock my gate in a random parking lot, it's going to screw up the lock?

I'm pretty sure I have hit that lock with the Rav key and it works fine.

To tag on to what Jimmyh posted, with my own personal experience, when I returned my defective lock it was 'no questions asked'. I bought mine through Amazon. I just called them and told them it wasn't working, and they said to send it back and they would send me a new one. They never asked about when it was bought or from what source.

Mine did the same. I sprayed some WD40 into the key hole and it works fine.

The coded one will only work one time. You can't sell it to someone else and they try to code it to there key. They would have to buy another lock.

I hit that lock with another Tacoma key and that was it, stopped working. I assumed I disabled the lock. The install instructions do state not to use any other key. They do not say what happens if you do.

For those who had the lock fail with the tailgate closed, how did you access the lock to remove/repair it? I've removed all of the tailgate cover fasteners I can. I'm stuck. Any help is much appreciated.

A little of this and a little of that
I had to pop off the tailgate rail "cap" to be able to slide the cover up and out to finally get access to release the lock.

NOTE: I did end up breaking a couple of the integrated plastic clips of the end cap so be wary.

In the middle of the tailgate cover there is a little piece that goes in to the gate. It lines up the cover. Just reach under and push up. it will then side out. You don't have to remove the rail cap.

I, too had bought the PL 5400. The bolt codeable one. I had it installed for about 3 months and it would not stay locked. I would lock it before driving and check it at destiation and it would be unlocked. I put the OEM one back on and pitched the POS in the trash. It felt chinsey and did not operate as solidly as the OEM one.
