    Hi Guys (and gals?),

New to the forum here so post a link if indeed I am useless with the search, but I couldn't find anyone else asking my question(s), so here goes... thanks for your help in advance..

Ive recently ordered the 3" OME lift and have already bought a set of 285's cause I love the look of the 33s, but I gotta figure this spare tire situation out..

I know that a 33 will fit up there if you cut or bend the alignment "tabs," but would the stock spare rim rub the UCA's?
I know you need at least a 4.5" BS to clear them with a 285 on a 3" lift...
(I bought light racing UCA's for the record)

My second question is that if the stock spare rim would in fact rub, how would a steelie with 4.5" BS mount up in the stock location? would it hang down super low?

If anyone has pictures it would be a tremendous help!

    Thanks Guys!!

Welcome. What rims are you mounting your regular tires on?

If you're using the stock rims - likely you'll need wheel spacers, in which case the spare rim will work when mounted on the spacer also.

If you're getting aftermarket rims with different backspacing, then yeah, you'll need a 5th one for your 33" spare.

Yes the 11.5" wide spare will hang down about 2" more than the factory stock 9.5" wide spare. But the backspacing on the rim won't affect the spare tire hanger - which works using a cable.

    Hope this helps.

I got a set of Mickey Thompson classic locks (17x9), with the 4.5" BS

I see you have a 2011, do you know if it is also a cable for an 08?

Yep, they use the same technique for attaching the spare on all the 2nd gens.

Drop it yourself to have a look. It only takes a couple minutes and being familiar with it from some lazy saturday afternoon in your driveway with a beer in your hand is way better than figuring it out for the first time 40 miles from West Overshoe, off camber, in the rain, 20 minutes after sunset.

Lol no doubt, unfortunately I haven't had the time to crawl under there yet but I will soon for sure.

As for how far it hangs down, does anyone have pictures of a 285 spare?
has it ever gotten in the way when off roading?

I used to keep a compromise size 265/75R16 spare down there.

Now I keep a full size 33" on a tire gate that I rotate in with the others when I rotate tires.

Ive heard tho that running a smaller spare isn't a good idea.. but then again Im no expert.

Could you not run a tire that's the same height as a 285 that's just narrower? doing the calculations a 235/85/17 would be the same as 285/70/17. But then again I don't even know if they make a tire like that

What about mounting a 285 on the stock spare rim and then just bolting on a wheel spacer if need be?
If I were to go that route, what size of spacer would I need?

    255/85R16

Relentless - but doing a tire gate pretty much means also doing a replacement bumper. If you're off-roading enough to worry about it - go straight to a high-clearance bumper. Departure angle on a Tacoma sucks. You'll always be dragging and banging the tail.

For the money required for the spacer, you might as well get an aftermarket rim. Especially since they're typically sold in sets of four. And the hassle involved when trying to mount it when all you want to do is change a spare and get back on the road... Feh...

255/85R16 on stock spare rim is probably your most practical solution if you want to keep same diameter.

Hi BJmoose! I am asking if the 245/75/16 will indeed fit in the spare tire compartment of 2010 Tacoma Dbl Cab 4x2? Stock or like stock wheel rim. Will I need to accommodate that spare with anything additional? I hope not. Thanks for all the great comments!

Yes. That's the stock spare tire size and is the supplied spare tire size on pre-runner and 4x4 models. So it'll fit.

GREAT! Thank you so much BJMoose! Is it wise or reccomended to use any type of spare tire cover for these under the chasis spares? I live in California, no off roading but cross country traveler on occasion.

I gather LR UCA's don't provide more clearance than the stock UCA's? Just curious whether or not a 285 on a stock steelie might clear the LR UCA's(assuming this is the rubbing pt.)

    I haven't measured - but "eyeballing it" I don't think they're any more compact.

I can't imagine trying to cover it. You could try. There's no cover on the stock spare.

    A little a this, a little a that...
I just did this mod and here's a pic of a 285 75 16 mounted in the stock location. It hangs about 1.5" below the hitch. It tucks up there better than I thought it would.IMG_1133.jpg IMG_1132.jpg

You have to do some cutting but I have a 285/70/17 under my truck on the stock spare rim

Has anyone experienced it pushing against the tailpipe? I know this might be a dumb question but doesn’t the pipe get super hot and would it melt the tire??
