noise while driving, goes away when braking... ??

OK, this is weird... I've noticed some quiet (I feel them more than hear them) clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk... coming from under my feet as I drive...

It's obviously related to rotation... when I drive it goes faster as I accelerate, and slows as I slow... it seems to make about four clunks per revolution of my tires... (guess)

The odd part... when I apply my brakes, even slightly, it goes away... totally disappears.

If I roll the windows down, I don't hear it any louder... Like I said, I more 'feel' it than hear it... but it's there.

Doesn't seem to change any upon cornering either direction... the only time the sound changes is when I start to apply brakes, even a little bit... then it disappears completely...

Truck info - '96 Taco 4x4 extra cab V6, 3" revtek lift, 31x10.5x15 TrxUS MT's...

... any brilliant ideas? Or tell me where to start looking? (It's been pouring here for days and my garage is full, so I haven't gotten underneath it yet... would like some ideas of where to look...)

 

that's what I'm leaning toward... can't get it up on jacks until tomorrow after work...

...even then, will be in the rain in front of the garage... Maybe I'll set up a tarp shelter, lol. pretend I'm camping while working on it.

 

I kinda have the same problem every now and again, But its a beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep sounds. when i brake, it goes away. im still trying to figure it out.

I finally get around to moving stuff away from the garage so I can lift the truck, remove the tires and look for the noise...

... and ...

goshdarnit, the stupid floor jack I have maxes out before it even lifts it. It's too danged low, rofl. (the kind I have is pictured below, lol)



... that being said, I did buy them to work on my cars, not a lifted truck... But even so, I feel like a moron now. Can't even jack my truck...

And now I have to go buy a jack that actually raises my vehicle.

Oh, and I also noticed I have skid plates covering the entire underside of my truck, can't even get to the crossmember jack point, rofl. It's under there somewhere. I guess that's a good thing, armor... except when it's in your way...

and yes, this is the FIRST time I've ever been under this truck.

 

I had a similar noise on an old VW. I was just about to replace the transaxle when I discovered the lug nuts were loose. Problem solved.

 

OK, so ... finally got myself a nice hydraulic jack, and got the truck into the air and on jack stands...

Pulled the wheels, removed the calipers, inspected everything... (my flex hoses are a little cracked... but that's no biggie...)

... now here's the weird part... after uninstalling / inspecting everything, I couldn't see a cause for the noise... I put it back together again, and...

voila ...

Noise is gone.

WTF??

I'm not going to complain... pretty sure something wasn't quite assembled right with my front calipers/pads, and that removing/reinstalling it fixed it... But ... wow. Weird.
