Just a guess here, but since when a leaf spring compresses, it gets longer, but a shackle has to go through an arc, causing your spring rate to vary with position. This setup should keep things more (cough) linear. And have no clue if you could possibly know the difference. However it looks damn cool to me.

Thanks for the link. Going in my fav list.

Even with a 1/2" gap you might still wear the paint off in a few spots if you wheel hard. Definitely do no want the bumper touching the fender or flare though. You might think having a gap looks weird, but you'll get used to it and it will save you some headache down the road.

Really nice welds. Do you do move the tip in little circles? I've been trying to improve my technique and the appearance of my welds.

Thanks. Yeah circles or "e's" is what i do. Sorta depends on the material, situation, welding area, because I sometimes have to go back to the "push pull" method.

Hello gents. I've been wanting to pick up a small cheap welder, mostly just to start to learn with, and Harbor Freight sent me a coupon for this little 90 amp. What do you guys think? Keep in mind, this is for learning purposes for the time being.

90 amps is entirely useless IMO. get a minimum of 140 amps, 180 or more preferred
not to mention, one that at least has the option of hooking up shielding gas later on

    I agree! ^^

I haven't done much welding, but my first experiences were with cheap flux core machines. Those experiences were disappointing to say the least. My first go with a real 220 amp machine with shield gas was a night and day difference. Save your pennies and buy a machine that is at least upgradable to run gas.

Thanks a ton guys. You just saved me $100 that I can now put towards a worthwhile machine.

My bumper uses both the reinforcement plus straps that bolt through the frame.

What's wrong with that 90 amp machine? According to the review it's capable to weld 3/8" plate with good penetration. I'm gonna try and weld up a goose neck hitch with it!
