What head light bulb/led do i need for white light?

So last night i took my truck out back and was out past dark. This was the first time I took it out since I installed my light bar. i found that the stock amber headlight color was less than desirable compared to the white light of my LED bar.

So now I would like to change my headlight bulbs to bring the color in line with the LED light of my light bar. As so many of you have probably already changed head light bulbs, what did you do with? Fwiw I don't want to go to projectors.

Also, if there is a good suggestion for doing the same to fog lights i would appreciate that info too.

5k is usually close to the led output with HIDs

if your going led bulbs then get 6k.

 

I stuck Lifetime LED lights in my tacoma for both the headlights and fog lights. So far I love them! I've had them for about 3 months with absolutely no issues. They offer free lifetime replacement if the lights ever stop working, which is a big benefit to me and really helped me swallow the high initial cost. They are MUCH brighter than stock on my 2013 Taco and still have a very good cutoff. The color is pure white! They match perfectly to the rigid dually lights have have stuck on my bull bar.

Which bulbs are for the fog lights? Are they the H11?

 

white light is not better to see with... there are no facts from any credible scientist that will support the claim and it's all in your head.

any bulb with a tint on it won't be brighter it just shades out the other colors (less actual light).

yellow and green light are the best spectrum's to see in and you just blocked them

You sir, are incorrect about white LED's being less bright than other forms of LED. Yes tinted filament bulbs block out light which lowers the observed lumen of any filament bulb, but LED's work with a luminescence and phosphorescence emission that is not in any way similar to a filament light bulb. The phosphor "blocks" the waves emitted, but it releases the energy it absorbs in another part of the light spectrum. Think glow paint. In some cases this efficiency surpasses even CCFL's that emit white. The trick with LED's is getting enough power into the thing in a fairly stable fashion without blowing it out.

White light is actually an amalgamation of all of the colors of the spectrum that our cones can see mixed together. So this is why it is difficult to make perfectly white light, you need a material to emit at least three high peaks of light.

Anyways, if you look at a LED spectrum chart for a typical non RGB white LED this is what the white light is made of:



As you can see white LED's actually throw off a fair bit of light in the yellow and green portions of the spectrum. There area's that white LED's are weak at emitting is the 500 nm trough (light blue/turquoise) and anything over about 600 nm (orange and red). While blue is the largest luminous source total luminescence is achieved by spiking all three of the cone types that our eye's see, hence our minds perceive it as white.

A yellow LED phosphor will give similar output to a white phosphor, all depending on the efficiency of the phosphor chosen of course. Most original LED blubs where red since that was the most efficient color. Now all colors can be made relatively efficiently using phosphors, other than purple. Right now the hardest primary color to get a good yield from is blue, hence why blue LED's are not common in lighting applications. That being on top of the fact that perceptively cool colors are not as well translated by our brains in dark environments.

I'm not expert on the human eye, but I would suspect that our eyes have evolved/adapted/been divinely engineered, to see the best in sunlight which is white and is comprised of a mixture of all colors seen in the same proportions present in a typical rainbow.

I agree that it's kind of silly to put blue glass on some halogen bulbs to filter out the yellow light so they appear more white. This also makes them run hotter and decreases their longevity.

I would think however, that pure yellow or pure green light would make it kind of difficult to distinguish certain colors from other colors. The last time I checked, I didn't see too many cars with emerald green or canary yellow headlights.

I think Sterdog's post was interesting and informative especially since LEDs were part of the subject of this thread. I would like to thank him for sharing.

The OP bought White LED's. You called him stupid for buying them. I pointed out you needed to read the thread, since he did not buy coated halogen bulbs, and I gave you some good information on LED lights. Jerk .
