The most important piece of kit if you're looking to do more than put a bandaid on a papercut is training. Take a class and get first responder certified. They will teach you how to administer proper first aid, cpr, the heimlich maneuver, and certain legalities you should be aware of, for instance, you are not legally allowed to perform the heimlich on someone choking and conscious without their consent. They can legally sue you for assault and battery EVEN if you save their life with it.

After that a basic first aid kit will handle the majority of what you will encounter.

Avoid snake bit kits however. From everything I've read they do more harm than good. The knife free suction ones remove virtually no venom and just help to bring fresh blood to the area. The kits with the scalpel allow you to remove very little venom and do more harm by making an open wound for infection to get in. The majority of the time you're not more than 12 hours (usually much less) from a hospital and you'll be fine. If you're going somewhere where you will be more than 12 hours away from help research the venomous creatures in the area and bring any potentially needed antivenom as well as any information you need to positively identify the creatures with you.

Someting like this should be more than sufficient.

If you really want more something like this is a good supplemental kit.

2008taco nailed it on n the head. Best emergency kit is a well trained brain. Second is duct tape, water, rope, and a shovel.

Anyone care to wake winch on Fiesta island today? Should be there for a couple hours.

I heard this the other day and looked into it and couldn't find anything that says they are anti ohv. The only thing I did find was that they don't contribute to ohv activities. Also the way the company works if you had enough members voting to support ohv they would have to.

REI hasnt come out and said they are anti OHV or anything. But rather most people have issues with who they are giving grants to (ie donating money). Some of the groups they donate to are anti-OHV. So people make that connection and say REI is anti OHV. Following that sort of pattern you wont see REI sponsoring clean ups or anything that are OHV related. If its a joint thing for OHV and hiking/camping they *might* but most of the time they only sponsor events that have zero to do with OHV.

But on that note since so many people hate on REI....people better stop buying nike, thule, the north face, vibram, Keen, Patagonia, and more.

Go here and take a look at how many companies have donated to "anti-OHV" organizations.

I bet every single member has at least 1 item from 1 of those companies. And if you camp/hike/ski/backpack i bet those members have 10+ items either bought from or made by one of those companies. And theres not a whole lot you can do unless you spend tons of money for hand made custom gear

Familiar with that list and the companies in it. Some of them make really nice stuff, I own zero of their items.

my buddy just broke down on the freeway. He said there was a clunk in the pedal and then he couldn't accelerate so he pulled over. Now his truck won't turn over. Headlights come on but it won't start. Anyone have any ideas?

Rei is a consumer cooperative. This means the money that they donate to causes goes there because their customers ask for it to. This means if you go in there and ask them to donate funds to a cause of your choice they may consider it. If you and 100 friends go in and do the same they'll pay more attention to you.
