Um, no. My 13 passat averaged 46-47mpg over the first 20k miles.

I don't follow this logic. People I know that want a comfy ride in a truck get the biggest damn thing they can afford. IMO, if the Hilux was actually built to be used as a truck, unlike the current Tacoma, then bring it over now! Change the front end, but bring it over.

Surely they can sell the Hilux at the same price range as the current Tacoma, seeing as how they've saved a ton of money over the last ten years, selling the least amount of truck for the most money possible. Not to be negative, but c'mon. No real engine upgrades for a decade, spray painted dash boards not used in any other Toyota, Plastic bed, shit springs, pot metal frames for near 40K?? I honestly don't care about the engine/tranny as I'm satisfied with its current power output, but the other shit is an embarrassment. Spending a couple months reading this site+ the things I've spotted on my own have made me so paranoid that I'm hesitant to toss a bag of mulch in the bed for fear of breaking something!

All that said, for some reason, I still love my truck.

    I don't agree.

Even the most humble modern beater will clock 100k with almost zero maintenance.
I remember when a car with 50k was pretty near ready for the scrappers.
You didn't drive 1000 miles without getting a flat tire.

I will say I'm mostly happy with my 2008, but the design could use some updating.

Well, I for one don't miss changing the points, plugs, and condenser, keeping my knuckles out of the fan blades while I adjusted the timing, etc.

I'll grant you that the "old" cars were a lot simpler and the things that went wrong were easier to fix. Today's cars don't need nearly as much maintenance, but repairs when they are needed can be more costly, but I'm real happy to have that computer running the fuel injection.

They're taking orders on these, but they don't even have specifications listed on either the Chevy or GMC websites. No curb weight, ground clearance, dimensions, nothing. I'm not interested in buying one, but if I was I'd like to see something other than highlights of features and pictures.

They seem like nicely equipped trucks and the top motor is a lot more HP than the 4.0 (302HP vs. 236HP), but the same torque at 270 lbs. So that's not impressive without seeing the HP and torque curves. Which of course aren't provided.

    Howdy,
wonder how many recalls they will have on these. If GM cant make a dependable vehicle with a proven brand, I would sure be worried about these new ones. I once was a GM fan big time. I raced chevys and drove their trucks. The best ones used to have a door sill plaque which said "Body by Fisher". Those were quality machines. Now days since the Obama take over they have gone down hill at a rapid pace. I will stick with my Taco and laugh at the GM wannabees!!!!!

Just wait till you have to change the dpf. Every 100k. I've been on tdiclub.com and all the guys with high milage new ones are complaining about the big expensive so changing that stuff. I'm going to take this with a grain of salt, but all they guys on tdi club, it's the tacomaworld of vw diesels, say there are many problems with the new ones. Dpf regen problems. Intercooler icing up in cold winter causing the car not to start. Egr problems. Grant it this May just be a vw thing but it's something to look at when thinking Bout a new diesel. Hell just look at the big three. They are having tons of problems with emissions crap. Just my 2 cents though.

There is no way in hell I would even think about getting in the Chevy. 13 people died for sure because Chevy ignored issues with the ignitions. Not to mention the other million recalls for other shit that they should not have missed. The interiors on every single chevy vehicle I have been in felt cheap and shitty.

We had a G5 at work yesterday that had the dash literally held together by duct tape.

Isn't VW known for poor reliability? I know every one at work hates working on them because they are such a pain in the ass to deal with too.

What'll be interesting is if Ford ever brings the European Ranger into this country. While it's still a Ford product, it's a much more stylish looking ride than most of Ford's current U.S. truck lineup.

I'd buy that truck. Damn nice looking ride. Why can't we have nice shit like this being sold over here? Like the Hilux, its probably built a helluva lot better too. Most likely because they're not forced to bolt 500lbs of emissions shit on it and make run off recycled laundry detergent.

    More than I can afford
More margin in full size trucks.

Why get someone to pay $25,000-$35,000 for a small/midsize truck when you can get them to pay $30,000-$50,000 for a full size one.

I think the question is can GM compete with Toyota in the small truck market?

Doesn't mean the Tacoma can't disappear.... Everyone knows the midsize truck market is shrinking, google it if you don't believe me.

Toyota has been too complacent with the tacoma. Look at their interiors, and lack of body/engine/transmission upgrades. When you don't "upgrade" your current product, it can become obsolete. Toyota hasn't changed their body style/engine/trans in 10 years. What other manufacturer hasn't changed their body style in 10 years? They do make a reliable truck, but that's not saying much compared to their competition being a bunch of turds.

It's going to be interesting. Interesting that Toyota only upgrades the Tacoma when other manufacturers come out with products that could be superior. Think about it.

X2. It all comes down to complacency. They have been too comfortable for too long.
