Help! - How do I get this fuse out? - before dark??

I'm trying to remove ABS 2 on my 2003 Tacoma. It's the 30 amp one. I've got the fuse box separated. And the fuse holder separated. But I can't figure out how to get the fuse out. There are two white tabs on each side, but I can't figure out how to push them both in and pull up on the fuse at the same time. And it seems as though it would only release the white innards, not the two black halves.

Is there a tool for this?
Is there a different way to remove the fuse?

What is the trick? I've got all this apart, which already took an hour, and I don't want to put it back together without success. It's almost dark here.

Seriously, I'd like to take the guy who designed this and slap him around for a couple hours with a big fish bat.

Fuses are supposed to be changeable. I shouldn't have to use calculus or post on forums over a simple fuse.

 

Can't you just pull the fuse (orange part) out without having to mess with anything else?

 

i don't know. i read that it was bolted in and that you had to take everything apart. i tried pulling on it and it wouldn't come easily and i didn't want to break anything, so i proceeded that way. now i'm where i'm at. and my fuse puller is only a one space puller.

i'm not sure how this thing comes out.

these kinds of threads: granted that says 50+ fuses but i read elsewhere about the 30.

if it's made to pull out it's in there good. i can't do it with my fingers, and i'll break it if i use pliers. my little white fuse puller is only good for a single space fuse.

 

use a small screwdriver to undo the clips holding the two halves you might need to unbolt the box from the truck to get a better angle on the clips. Once the box is apart, you have to slide out the plastic piece that the fuse sits in. You will find the two wires that go to that fuse are bolted to the plastic piece (and the fuse) unbolt the wires and the fuse slides right out. Bolt the wires back to the plastic piece, slide the plastic piece back to the box, put the box back together and bolt the box back to the truck. Easy as that


After reading that, I would assume you would pry outward on those white clips and see if it will slide out and then I'm assuming again, that you will see 2 small screws connecting the wires to the fuse. I have no idea though. I've never messed with that on a 1st gen.

 

You should be able to grab fuse with channel locks and work it out. I just did it to see for myself. Might have to take fuse out next to it to grab.

Nope. channel locks ripped the top of the fuse off. Now I have to get it out. This is so
f-ing stupid.

There are not bolts. I've taken the box apart. i've remove the black fuse piece in thats shown in the picture. still not bolts. this sucks

How much do the fuse is left? Was it just the top that popped off? Maybe you could take those needle nose pliers and pull at each side a little and see if it will gradually start coming out. Once it gets started/moving it should get easier to get out.

The fuse it made to pull out. It just wouldn't budge. Channel locks broke the top off.
Those white tabs are connected to the pins that insert into the fuse, not the fuse itself. But it was by pushing them up, that I was able to lift the fuse out enough to get a flathead under where it broke off and pry the fuse out. I'll post pics in a few.

Sorry it broke, did you grab in the center? I used the edge where it's stronger. How bad ? Really sorry that happened op.

 

There was only one way to grip it. But no worries. If anything, it forced the issue. And it was just a standard pull out fuse.

 

So, I wanted to pull the fuse to disable ABS. I tried it the other day and it wouldn't budge. Decided to check on-line and see if there was any strange Tacoma quirks. I ran across a few threads about it being bolted in. Made sense, since it seemed in there good. All threads said you have to take the fuse box apart.

So at 5:30 (western) I decided to try it. Be done by dinner time, right? Ha.
I kept taking more and more parts of the box apart. Till I had just that single fuses harness separated. All of this needlessly. Then I made this post. Then I broke the fuse. Then I just pulled it out. Then I put it all back together and cursed.

Like I said to Andy, breaking it actually forced the issue. There was enough left to get a screw driver under the lip. Fortunately it wasn't bolted in. Just a fussy old fuse.

If anyone needs help disassembling their entire fuse box, even just for fun, pm me. I'm always down to help others completely waste their time.
