There you go. Pretty common these days and you won't be treated like a criminal. Just Google 'TSA flying with a firearm' and print the TSA's page, fold and place in your back pocket the days you travel. Then simply follow what it says to do and know why so if you get any push back you can calmly and politely cite their own guidelines. It seems everyone these days knows what to do and how to do it but back in the day there were a number of occasions where I had to educate the airline employee on what it was that had to be done. Kind of a scary thought really since at that point the person flying could tell them just about anything and get away with just about anything since several seemed clueless but these days if you know what's going on (and follow the steps) and they know what's going on it's all a non-issue really.

The Glock 23 is a nice gun. You can also get a 9mm barrel and magazine so it can shoot both 40 s&w and changing the barrel and mag out, you got a 9mm. A little cheaper to shoot. The glock 19 you can't switch the barrel, it's just a 9mm.

If you're shooting a lot of 9mm or shooting 9mm for something other than range plinking use, it's also smart to change the ejector

If you're going to shoot 9mm just buy a 9mm. I never was a fan of buying Glocks to shoot several calibers. IMO, get the 9mm and shoot the shit out of it and if after a few thousand rounds you still feel like you need a .40, buy one. With the cost of ammo these days the guns are the cheapest part really. Shooting something not designed for what you're asking it to do isn't a good idea so decide what you want to shoot (I would HIGHLY suggest 9mm over 40S&W) and buy that firearm.

I think the biggest confusion is with TSA locks. You should NOT use a TSA lock. Use a normal lock that they have to cut to get into. You will lock it in the presence of the agent and no one should need to unlock it. TSA locks are for luggage, not guns.

    So heres my scenario.

Im in the US military and on the other side of the country. Gf is flying from TN to WA soon and Id like her to fly with my pistol. Shes been shooting with me etc in the past but doesnt feel really comfortable walking into an airport with a firearm. Can my father go with her check the bag with tsa/leo then i go with her to pick it up on this end?

Thanks guys! Also, for my future reference, id assume it'd be best to have the hard sided case concealed in a discreet bag or do some of you just check the hard sided case?

    Thanks again TW

No way is security going to let anyone but the person flying w/the firearm check said firearm. Asking could generate red flags she does NOT want to deal with. It's seriously not a big deal for her to just do.

Also, not sure I understand your other question because it seems like you may be under the impression she's going to take the firearm onboard. The firearm(s) need to be locked in their own separate hard side case & then placed in your checked bag after TSA has scanned/inspected it.

Yes I understand it's CHECKED BAG ONLY! Okay that pretty much answer my ? Guess if she doesn't wanna I'll start calling around to FFL's/wait till I go home again.

So probably be best to put the hard side case in a backpack or another bag of some kind..

Did you read the TSA page? It's fairly clear & straight forward.

I don't see why he can't walk up with her to check in the bag. I walked up with my dad the other day to help him check in his luggage. I was carrying his roller for him. No one even said anything.

I mean she may have a lot of things to carry, your father is just helping her carry his bags/ luggage.

When declaring firearms you sign an legal document that the contained firearms are unloaded, properly packed and YOURS. In this day & age of heightened security this isn't something I would be willing to knowingly lie about. That's just me. You're welcome to try to get away with whatever you want.

Still not sure what the big deal is of the person flying doing this anyway.

This is what I did with my daughter last year. She was taking her AR back to Seattle. She had a backpack, purse, a checked bag and rifle case. We walked inside the terminal together. I carried the rifle case because it was the heaviest. We waited in line together. When her turn came, we walked up to the check in counter. She said she was flying to Seattle, handed her ID over and said she was flying with a firearm. They called a TSA agent over. She signed the declaration and locked the case. I hugged and kissed her goodbye. She called me after she got home and said everything was easy when she picked up her luggage. It's not a big deal. I go in to the counter with her even if she's not flying with a firearm. I'm not sure how someone would view this as being illegal in any way. It's not. Must be a misunderstanding.

    Bob
