Haha I definitely don't plan on covering myself in BBQ sauce.. But I keep all my food and stuff in either a cooler in the back seat or an action packer. I have been camping many times in bear country just I have always been enclosed and not have my legs sticking out. I am taking a shotgun and bear spray, can never be to prepared!

I have a habitat 4 REI tent, older model. I am looking for some suggestions in "winterizing" it.

Let me elaborate, it is a 3 season tent, with a nice screen that covers it like a giant X. Now this gives nice vitalization during the warmer seasons, but it makes the tent a little less comfortable in the rare colder camping I do, even with the rain fly. This September my wife will be joining me for an event in the mountains. Last year we saw temps around 26 degrees in the morning and mid 70s during the day. A winter or 4 season tent is not in the budget just yet.

What tricks do you have for keeping the heat in?

Can't forget mountain lions. Saw 2 cougars last time I was up at Gallagher head lake, and not the good kind of cougar! haha Good idea about keeping the keys by me to use the panic button if needed.

That is a great idea in the video. Im not to worried about bears as much as the other animals

I have the foot print for it and usually sleep on a blow up mattress. The dog and I did this trip last year and I ended up firing up the coleman stove in the tent when I needed to get up. It wasn't too cold for me, but will be for her. She needs time to adjust to the cold again, to much time in the city.

It is a great tent, survived a snow storm a few years ago. Was only expecting some light rain and got 3" of snow.

Yeah, I know. Wasn't planning on using the stove for heat, just kind of because necessary. I knew there was enough ventilation not to worry about the exhaust. I need to get the little buddy heater.

If youre not backpacking just take an extra sleeping bag or 2. Definately put on the rain fly and make sure you have plenty of bottom insulation. A bag liner or fleece blanket can make a huge difference too.

If you want to help keep your wife happy get up a few minutes before here and put on some coffee or hot cocoa and make sure she has warm clothes (worst part of getting up is putting on icy cold clothes). So even if she slept a little cold shes got a hot drink and the morning doesnt suck as much

I have found that air matresses can be quite cold. Foam pads I think are much better. Maybe some foam pads or thick fleece blanket on top of the air matress...?

You have to link them from somewhere else like photobucket

I would put the foam under the air mattress it will do the same job insulating you but they wont be slipping on the air mattress.

Anybody have experience with one of these? Fire ban is on up here, and I'm wondering if this would be acceptable. Also it would be great in cooler months at the edge of the awning.

Around here the fire restrictions usually mean that you can't have any wood burning fire unless its in a forest service provided campfire ring with a certain radius clear of any fuels and the extreme restrictions mean that you can't have any wood burning fire period. only propane grills are allowed since they can be controlled and turned off if necessary. I have heard that these are allowed in that case.

But the rules change regionally - check with the nearest forest service office or fire department and they'll tell you what is or isn't allowed.

Yup I have one of those. My understanding was that a fire ban banned any open flamed fires. With this it is contained. So I thought it was legal but MTGirl may no more than me.

    Thanks for the input.
Will definitely ask before burning once I get mine.
What's your opinion? They look like a great idea.

I really like mine. Haven't cooked on it yet but have had a few fires in it. Mine isn't that exact one but darn close to it, mine can be torn town and everything fit inside the stove and carried easily for camping. I just have to find out if it is okay to use it with the fires going on here in Washington.
