Kings canyon/sequoia national park is awesome, well more so the national forest, tons of hiking trails that allow dogs, tons of easy forest service roads with awesome views. I don't remember too many lakes though. You can also camp in the NF or in one of the main or less developed campgrounds.

Another area that has tons of lakes is the blue lakes area, decent amount of forest roads and some awesome hiking. You can either camp at blue lakes or in the NF.

    +1 to you sir!

One of my favorite backpacking areas! Swam in Powell Lake on the way out to rinse off the grime from a few days worth of backpacking. Long lake is one of my favorite spots to camp. If you have never been to Cooper Meadow, you should. Its only 3.5 miles from the Coyote Meadow trailhead. It's right under the rock formations pictured in the distance. Last time I was there a cattle operation was going on. Guy shared some beer and whiskey with me and I got to check out the historic cabin there. Nothing like a surprise ice cold beer after a few days in the woods!

There are lots of "primitive" campsites which I interpret to be what you're looking for.

    http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gDfxMDT8MwRydLA1cj72BTJw8jAwjQL8h2VAQAzHJMsQ!!/?ss=110516&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=FSE_003738&navid=110240000000000&pnavid=110000000000000&position=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&recid=18850&ttype=recarea&pname=Bowman%20Lake%20Campground

You'll need to get a campfire permit if you don't have one already (even if you only want to use a stove) - and the easiest way to know whether campfires are currently permitted at bowman lake is just to call the ranger station and ask directly.

Haven't met ya but I figured 120k on OME means you are driving the truck like it was intended for. That alone made me vote for ya. Goodluck with the quest for an update to your suspension.
