The Tacoma has a nice 7-pin round connector for the trailer lights. My trailer has a 4-pin flat connector.

Yes, they make an adapter, and I have one. But its something that bounces around the truck when I'm not towing, and could easily get lost.

So I'm considering adding a 4-pin flat connector to the truck. I've seen two ways to do this:

    1) Replace the existing 7-pin round with a similar looking device that has a 7-pin round as well as 4 and 5-pin flat connectors.

    2) Add a 4-pin flat connector someplace next to the existing 7-pin and tap the appropriate wires.

I see pros and cons of each way - replacing is probably the neatest way, but how easy is it to get the existing connector off and is there enough slack in the wires to cut them off the old connector and still attach to the new one? Adding a 4-pin is probably very easy (wire taps to the appropriate wires) but is there a place to easily mount it?

    Thoughts? Comments?? Suggestions???

I recently went from a Tacoma to an F150 and it is wired for both a 7 pin and 4 pin trailer. It has a nice, neat holder for both connectors. Maybe you could use one of those for your truck.

Mine adapter has never bounced around or gotten lost in my glovebox. It just goes straight in there as soon as it comes out of the plug.

A friend has an F150, and yes the replacement one I'm looking at is similar to that, I'm just not sure how easy it is to get the existing one out.

Well you're a better man that I. Left it on the bumper as I was disconnecting the boat several times now. Happily this is at my house so the adapter falls off somewhere in the driveway. Hey, you'll be old some day too!

Couldn't you just leave the adapter on the trailer? That seems like the easiest cheapest way but I also understand the need for new parts that might not be that important but you want to have anyway haha.

I leave it attached to the plug on my trailer so I never have to search for it but then I only have one trailer.

Leaving it attached to the boat isn't an option as I have two other trailers, an enclosed cargo, and an open flat bed - all have the flat 4-pin

If you decide to replace yours I may buy your old one. First time off-roading I blew that mount off of the bumper.

I have a 4 conduct adapter that stays with the jack.

Amazon has a number of different combo jacks. So does Tractor Supply.

    I'll let you know.

Aren't you afraid someone will walk off with it first time you're in a parking lot?
