Why is this even a question? The replies run the gamut and I am not surprised at the variety of answers....

Why are the OP's tools in someone else's storage space to begin with? And, why doesn't he/she have a key? Or a way to get the key and entry code?

    So many questions...

I know a guy who knows a loss prevention officer at Walmart. Says someone came in with a rotisserie chicken with only the bones left. Said he didn't like it and wanted his money back. They obliged.

Just because one person, or a small OR large company does what you are stating, doesn't make it ethical do do what the OP was asking about.

Perfect answer below. Almost missed it.

    I remember that asshat!

Actually I can understand it. There are lots of allowances for what Walmart classifies as "customer satisfaction". Of course they won't let everyone do it, but I have seen a lot of companies who bite the bullet on one thing, to help later on. Piss off the wrong customer over a $5 chicken and it can come back and bite you.

    Bone stock. For now.
I work for a large Marine Distribution company (large for the size of the industry) overseeing returned merchandise/credit issuance from the six warehouses in our division. All of the time on the Return Forms under "Reason Returned" I see a "Did Not Need" or something similar. Things like this cost our company tens of thousands of dollars per week. Yes, we get the product back, and that does make it available for resale. But that's just it, it is available for resale. That doesn't mean just because it's back in our hands it's automatically sold again. It has to be restocked, cleared for resale, and put back into inventory. And don't forget all the lost shipping costs, from the manufacturer to us, from us to the customer. Oh, and then there's the warehouse employees that have to be paid to check in the returned product, write up the credits, and put it all back on the shelves. Then there's me, who gets paid to process all of the credits and readjust inventory.

It's not just as simple as, "Oh, they're a big company so it doesn't matter." ALL companies are made up of people. And people matter. That's the bottom line.

Going to be hard due to our locations being 3,000 miles apart, but sure. You seem cool. When you moving to dirty jerzey?

No one did. Your lack or morals and ethics would prevent you from doing so because I would never give you the opportunity to do so.

You saying you would never steel while telling someone else to steal is kinda ironic hu?

X2. Guy quoted above you needs some help in that department currently.

Yup, and ultimately the customers bear that.

Worst case you have a couple of extra tools for your junk drawer or a job where you need 2 of the same thing in the future

Murdering someone is ethical if your life is in danger as I see it..that's about it.

Mitigating circumstances, eh? Their collective morality appears to fall by the wayside now that individual morality is broken down to an isolated incident. Again, I'm not arguing ethics of murdering, pedophilia, or stealing which is what this thread has quickly devolved into.

To claim that me purchasing an over-sized bolt cutter to use once on my lock will take 55 years off the lifespan of the product is a massive stretch. It's still legal to do as the OP asked.

Curious why the salesperson at Autozone who sold me the wrong oil filter wrench for my motorcycle took it back after it was obviously used, and then sold me the correct one, which I kept, which was also highly used. Who has moral and ethics in this case? Or is everyone stealing and we'd all break into your truck anyway?

I'm not going to waste my time telling you why your thinking is tarded because clearly you can't understand the reasoning.

Of course you won't, because if you can't name call and throw out snap judgements then it isn't fun, eh? Your myopic moral superiority, mixed with untrue definitions and an overflowing sense of ego that someone cares to break into your truck is debilitating. You've been very helpful to me in the past, but it appears we won't agree on this, and in such a demeaning way by you, too.

Technically speaking, the company would make interest off of his money for the two or three days they still had it, or you could look at it like OP would lose interest on the money for the few days he didn't have it...while he had the tools...SO he is technically renting tools from a company that doesn't really have a rental program.

    I would however...

A: Not store anything in someone else's possession without access. ( should have a key)

B: Cut the lock, buy a new one....give them the key when they get back.
