I don't want to judge anyone, because I have done some really terrible things in my life. I just want to give a "Big Nameless/Faceless Company's" point of view.

Have we now come so far in this thread that the overall consensus is leaning towards abolishing all return policies at every store?

Josh, it would appear that return policies pay your salary, and part of that "tens of thousands of dollars a week" is put in your pocket to pay your job position and your lifestyle. <- I more-so mean this as a joke, but the rationale is there in your post

What if everyone returned shit after they stopped using it?

Yeah, most of these places are multi-million dollar corporations and a small return won't hurt them very much. Does that mean they owe you free tools whenever you need them? Hell no.
Like everyone else is saying, Auto Zone will loan you them for free because they have a program that's set up to do that kind of thing.

Will, if everyone threw one piece of trash out, or spilled a drop of oil on the ground, or turned on their air conditioners, or downloaded a picture, all at the same time.... the list can go on, bud.

No one said anything about "owing" anyone anything. The way this thread has expanded even though stores have return policies is astounding!

Mike, I suppose I should have clarified for your sake: that's not my only duty at my job, just one of them. You must have misread, or just plain missed, the COSTS US tens of thousands of dollars per week. There are plenty of other things I could be doing at my job besides issuing credits to people who don't really need to return things in the first place. But thanks for making the assumption.

To clarify, no, I am not against people making returns when needed. I just wanted anyone who may happen to be interested to know that yes, there are consequences to situations like the OP brought up with this thread. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don't think I've seen this posted yet, but how about calling your friends, telling them you need to get into the storage unit, and you'll be glad to get them a new lock when you cut theirs off?

My assumption was based on your wording, so thank you for clarifying. You're fine with returning an item when needed, so when a person returns an item simply for not needing it this troubles you because you could be doing other things with your job.

The question now becomes serious, then. Should we abolish all return policies, or only accept those items back which we deem have morally and ethically sound reasoning to? And who is the final judge on what is morally or ethically sound reasoning to return these items?

I know corporations accept items back within a certain amount of time for no reason, so they've already decided and accept it. They also pay part of a person's salary to accept return items because, while that is not their only job, it is part of their job.

Now you're opening up an entirely new thread on TW about the moral and ethical rationale of damaging someone else's property and then going through their things simply to get your property back. That is, if they don't answer the phone and you do it anyway. :D Best suggestion here, though.

In case anyone cares, I will be making a video about installing my tow receiver on my Tacoma. Debating whether I should include the part about returning tools, lol.

I think it's a move that shows a lack of character. How would you like it if someone came into your shop, store or whatever it is you do and just stole the use of your product or service?

Stores have return policies because they want to be able to do right by a customer if there's a problem with size, quality, function, or whatever. You're just abusing their goodwill.

If you can do it and live with yourself, fine. But what goes around comes around.

Yep ppl with LINK cards (~food stamps), buy expensive meats, and return them for cash since you can't put money back on the link card, then take the cash and buy alcohol in the same store...common practice here in IL...the meat has to be thrown away

I think you are over-complicating this. Why, I'm not sure. The question of abolishing all return policies, or accepting only what some almighty judge deems morally and ethically sound was never posed until you posed it.
