Reconnect Battery and A/C experience

So, I disconnected my battery (negative lead) to remove my front driver and passenger seats. Afterwords, I reconnected the batter and we went to out to the local casino. On the way there, I turned on the A/C and all it did was blow mild (outside vent) air. I checked and made sure the A/C light was on...I even cycled it off and on a couple of times. I finally turned it off from full blast and drove another 10 miles. On a lark, I tried it again and it miraculously worked. I tried a search but couldn' find any mention of this. I did check it again later that night and it worked, so there's no real issue. i just wanted to find out if anyone else has experienced this or knows why it didn't seem to work right away.

Similar thing happened to me, I've also seen a few posts here regarding this. It seems the A/C needs to recycle somehow after a battery disconnect...no big deal.

 

did the same to me, i almost crapped my pants because i thought i Fed it up after having it for only 3 days. i turned the car off, then on again and it worked

 

Yeah, my butt was in a pucker too. Glad to know I'm not the only one. Must need time to "reset" something or other. Thanks for the reply.

That's got to be one of the coolest techie ways to say "reset" that I've ever heard. Seriously though, thanks for taking the time to provide a detailed explanation. I am totally at ease with yesterday's occurrence.

Same thing happened to me when i disconnected the battery to do my cruise control install. Came back on in 5 mins or so. But, yeah, my ass puckered up quick when it wouldn't blow cold.

 

the last two times i unhooked my battery to change out a radio, mine did this. The a/c would not work at all the next morning driving to work until i got off of the interstate and slowed down, then the cold air would kick on!

 

Great post, same thing happened to me. It would not work on a 100 mile drive after I had it in to the dealership for problems with the radio they obviusly had taken the battery leads off. Next day and ever since it has worked spot on.

 

Ok, I admit that I'm a n00b but I don't really understand the necessity of disconnecting the battery to unplug the radio or the seats.

my 2006 DC did this as well after I had a remote start put in..thought it was broken, then the next day it worked fine. i was like, WTF...

 

It depends on how close you are to airbag circuitry. It's a "just in case" precaution. 09+ all have airbags in the seats, so you would want to follow all airbag precautions before removing/installing a seat.

 

Safety first!

 

Someone with an electrical background will jump in here, but practically any work done on your truck should necessitate disconnecting the battery first. In the olden days, electrical circuits in a vehicle were 'dead' until switched on - except for clocks etc. Now, there is always some current running through various circuits to maintain ECU settings memory etc. and likely AC setting memory as well. It was also explained to me once, that money was saved in wiring harnesses by having components 'hot' with the circuit interupting off / on switching done somewhere downstream.

 

The others are correct. One needs to be careful when playing with DC electrical. If you were connecting up a big audio amplifier maybe using some #8 or 10 cable and accidentily had a quick short to ground, you could start a fire. 12 volt automotive batteries can deliver upwards of 400 amps of current plenty enough to weld with. ALWAYS remove not only the battery negative terminal but also any rings, watches, bracelets anything metal from your hands.

Like JKD said...I disconnected mine because I have airbags in my seats. I didn't want to chance setting those puppies off while I was disconnecting them (under the seats).
