What Type Of Radio do you use for wheeling?

Ham, CB and handheld

 

Kinda surprised no hand held cb radios yet. I haven't bought one but was thinking about it. I don't want to install a radio and antenna. So i'm watching this thread.

 

Really should check with the people in your area that you will be wheeling with. Most people here used to have CB but have recently added HAMs. If you can afford a HAM, you can probably afford to add a CB as well since a decent CB setup is easily under $100. I would say HAM is much more versatile and functional for use other than just for wheeling. Its more beneficial if SHTF too. CB doesnt doo much unless you buy a fairly expensive setup that really wouldnt do much for our use. I personally have both.
Cobra remote mount cb with firestik and Yeasu Ft-7900R Ham. I use the HAM way more often. In my area, I actually have yet to actually USE the Cb other than to just monitor the chatter within the group for those who dont have HAM yet.

 

CB. Not many guys use HAM around here.

 

Thanks for the feedback. I posted a poll on here because everyone I wheel with seems to have a different set up and preference, and maybe this poll will help other members down the road.

 

In my 2011 used a Gallaxie 33 with a 350 watt amp and 102" steel whip. Friends complained about the excessive power so in the 2014 toned it down to just the Gallaxie and a 3' fire stick.....works good in the 3 mile range or so.

Just turn off your amplifier when wheeling. It's nice to have the extra power when needed. Here in upstate NY. Lots of hills and trees too get through.I use a Galaxy 98 it has a amp built inside. I just turn it all the way down when talking with other in a group.
