I order a new set of FJ SE wheels and tires for my '03

    Alright so I ordered a new set of the Silver FJ Cruiser SE rims and Bridgestone Revo 2 in 265/75/16 for my '03 exCab 4x4.

    My plan is to have these powder coated in the matte black to replicate the unobtainable Trail Team rims. Making alot of phone calls going thru what needs to be done in order to get the existing powder off.

    Media Blasting will take too long.

    Baking will bring the rims up to 800 degrees...which I really don't want to do.

    So, I guess acid dipping is my only remaining choice?

    Any opinions on this??

    Also, I have been trying to find the specs of my current stock alloy rims to find out if the new rims are a bolt on or if I am going to need spacers? I am running the exact same tires on the stock rims now with no problems.

    The FJ rims are 7.5x16 with 4.5" backspace and 15mm.

    I am not opposed to putting in the work, but, sanding off ALL the powder even from all the nooks and corners seems a bit labor intensive...and especially if it needs to be done right with powder being applied over it.

    I'm going the same route as you. I ordered mine today, should be here tomorrow. I've got quotes to prep and powder for a decent price, my concern is matching the center caps to the powdered wheels. I may try having the wheels and caps painted first. If worse comes to worse, they can always strip them back down and powder later.

    why would you take the finish off of the dark grey fj trd se wheels???

    Sorry, I didn't notice he said SE wheels. I think what he meant was the non-special edition TRD wheels that come in silver (part #
    $242 PT904 35070 Genuine TRD 16" Alloy Wheel for Toyota Tacoma and FJ Cruiser-New, OEM
    PT904 35070.)

    I tried to get the anthracite SE wheels, but Toyota TRD will not let you order them without a hassle. I have several friends in parts at both of my local Toyota dealers and tried several times. Toyota requires proof of ownership of a FJ that came equipped with the wheels, reason for replacement (damage, theft, etc.) We acquired a VIN number for the correct FJ and tried to jump through their hoops, but failed. That's okay though, I wanted the black anyways and I would have been torn about refinishing the anthracite wheels
    How much did the wheels cost you, Peter?

    I did mean the silver and not the anthracite...that's why they are getting stripped. Maybe I misrepresented what I had ordered...

    They were $125 each+shipping.

    The prices for stripping and powder are all over the place...most shops do one and not the other.

    I was assured that the matte black at any major parts chain would match the powder matte black very well in order to do the center caps myself. Just have to tape off the "TRD" logo.
