Always wear mine. I totally believe it's stupid not to wear a seat belt. I have NEVER heard anything intelligent come out of the mouth of anyone offering a reason as to why they don't wear one.

I always wear mine while in my truck. But, when I am in my car, I only wear it when on the highway.
Side note: there was a crash today here in Oregon. There were 3 people in a tacoma, only 1 person not wearing a seatbelt and he was the only fatality.

Cars are very very good at keeping people alive in an accident now. The biggest threat to you in an accident is being flung around inside the cage keeping you safe. That's where the seat belt comes in

Why not go with a full restraint seatbelt like NASCAR drivers wear?

Aw hell, we all need roll bars and shatter-proof glass in our vehicles too.

Better yet, just outlaw all vehicles so we never have to worry about auto collisions ever again.

Dang...you people worry too much. :p

It's the STRESS that's going to kill you.

Amazing on how few people who do not wear seat belts made comments....

I just can't think of a reason not to wear it.

    Actually, yes because I do.

I just disagree with laws that require it to be worn. Just like laws that say people are responsible enough to drive at 16 but have to wait until they are 18 to vote or join the military, and wait even longer until they are 21 before they can legally drink alcohol.

Tell me. Does that make any sense?

A seat belt only protects the person wearing it. If I choose not to wear it I am not endangering anyone but myself.

Just to play devils advocate here...seat belts can also be the cause of death due to one being unable to free oneself...damned if you, damned if you don't.

Yeah, but my car is 74 years old. So keeping people alive wasn't really all that important back then.
With the number of people who can't see my bright red truck, you won't catch me without the belt on when driving it.

I can agree with this. I do not like the nanny state our country has become.

However, just because you got away with not wearing your seat belt twice, doesn't mean it is smart not to wear it. Had I been wearing mine in the 2 accidents I was in I would have been unharmed instead of concussed.

I recently had surgery on my shoulder. Took the stitches out myself because they were itchy. Doctor said it was foolish of me to do so because I could have caused an infection. I said, "but doc, the wounds healed perfectly"... to which he replied, "Just because you got away with it, doesn't make it smart".

"YOU" = anyone that does not wear a seat belt...

Not 100% true.... Increased insurance premiums from folks that do unsafe things cause everyone else to play more. And as the driver, you are also legally responsible for the safety of everyone in your truck.

If a passenger gets hurt in your truck not wearing a seat belt YOU could be looking for a lawyer as your insurance company company will not back you for your failure to follow the law.

I do believe you should have the right not to wear a seat belt, but just like most health insurance policies for smokers, you need to pay more for the same coverage if thats how you want to live.

    Sound fare?

One of my good friends does not wear one and when I'm in his truck, I still wear one and he never says a word about it. He has a choice and so do I.

I still believe that most non belt drivers would never tell their insurance companies they do not. If you do not wear a seat belt, stand up and let it be known!

    Que?

Either you have a really bad auto-complete feature on your phone, or English is not your best language.

You know, It's really unfortunate that we as Americans are required by law to pay for not only auto insurance, but now health insurance.

Laws that require people to have insurance were made by people with power.

These people with power are given money from lobbyists and special interest groups to make laws that are beneficial to entities such as insurance companies.

We, the American public, pay our hard earned money to these insurance companies for services that are required by laws put in place by people with power who were funded by the same money that we spend for these services.

While it can be argued that these people with power are only acting in the best interest of the American public, in reality they are acting in their own best interest to keep the money flowing in their direction.

    Baaaaaaaah......We are all sheep.

Yeah, I got a little off topic here, but this is where seemingly benign laws like those that require us to wear seat belts and buy health insurance get us.

You think proper health care is making people more money? Meanwhile people pay $30,000 on average for delivering a baby WITHOUT any issues. God forbid you need any additional care. American healthcare is the most expensive in the world and it isn't really that great... http://www.theatlantic.com/business...-americans-spend-money-on-health-care/254736/

Why do people come here to get it then? I might agree that, on average, it isn't great, but we have the best hospitals in the world. Mayo clinic, UCLA medical center, Mass General, Johns Hopkins, etc... it is a matter of price.

Everyone doesn't "deserve" the best medical care. It must be paid for. It is a service. The best doctors spent a shitload of money to get where they are and deserve to be paid for their skills, just like athletes. Hell, moreso than fucking athletes.

    My opinion, mind you...

A friend of mine from work has Lyme disease. Pretty brutal disease if I'm honest. It requires her to take lots of medication and requires lots of surgery. This latest surgery she had to get a bunch of bones broken in her face because of the disease.

She was also recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. Because of her pre existing condition of Lyme Disease no insurance company would ever take her on. Each year she needs treatment it would cost roughly $50,000. That's the average yearly income in the US iirc. She also can't exactly work when she's doing chemo. This is on top of her expensive surgeries for Lyme disease and whatever it costs to treat that.
    http://costprojections.cancer.gov/annual.costs.html

The people who are making the big money is not the doctors it's the owners of the hospitals and the pharmaceutical companies. It's not like doctors up here don't make good money. They do make slightly less but they still make $120,000+
    http://www.medpagetoday.com/PublicHealthPolicy/PublicHealth/15931

If you look at that article I posted earlier it's pretty clear something is terribly wrong with the medical system down there. It's not perfect here but at least people are not paying $7000 for a Cat Scan or $30,000 for a pregnancy. Or this guy http://www.viralnova.com/hospital-bill/. It was supposed to cost $55,000 but because of his insurance it was "only" $23,500. $16,000 for the surgery and for staying in the recovery bed for two hours and it cost $7500. While up here you don't even see a bill after the surgery. You guys pay the most per person (nearly double what we pay per person) and have a life expectancy the same as the Czech Republic.

I'm not a fan of a large government but I think one area that is really significantly improved is healthcare when it is a single payer system. It worked really well for every country that has done it

I'm not saying it's perfect. I'm saying good health care is not an entitlement. It is a SERVICE.

I feel bad for folks who cannot afford it. Only a person with no feelings would not. It is sad. It is unfortunate. But I will never, ever, cave to the thought that the haves should care for the have nots. I came from a poor family. I worked to get where I am. I feel NO obligation to pay for those who refuse to do the same.

There are exceptions to the rule. Your friend seems to be one of them. But to expect insurance companies to take on debt is crazy. Pre existing conditions are like asking a bank to give you money for nothing. Sure... pay your $500 premium so we can dole out $50,000 for a surgery you needed before we did business. What bank would ever do that? What business would ever do that? Insurance is a business. It's much like a casino. House always wins. They never take a bad bet.
