Switched to Mobil 1

After spending too much time here reading about oil and all kinds of other fun stuff, decided to change to Mobil 1 (28,000 miles).



Still had my oil filter strap from my old S-10, worked great with an extension on the 4 banger. 14mm socket on the drain plug, set the torque wrench at 30ft-lbs for the reinstall. Mostly just because I wanted to try it out, just bought it today. Crazy cheap at Harbor Freight. Lot's of good tech info stored on this site. I've about given up on the Haynes Manual showing up from Amazon.

I think I saw this on a post from Chris4x4, great tip!


5 quarts filled it to halfway between the marks on the dipstick. I'll check it again after driving to work (10 miles) to see if I need to add.

Next up will be the 30k services - front and rear diff, transfer case, and transmission.

Mobil 1 is great! It makes my engine run smooth. Great pics!

 

Mobil 1 is good stuff. Switched my taco engine, diffs, and t-case to it at 1000 miles. Going to Royal Purple in the engine at 4500 miles because I want a true synthetic in this truck. Will switch the diffs at about 10k...no sense in wasting what's in there now. My daily driver Matrix still gets Mobil 1.

 

if im not mistaking doesnt the 2.7 take 0-20 or 5-20, toyota clearly states in the manual for the best mpg 0w-20 synthetic oil is the best to use

 

I use only synthetic and it runs very nicely.

 

change everything over to synthetic, youll notice a little more difference

 

That's what I mean. Everything in my truck is synthetic. Amsoil FTW.

 

The manual for my 2006 says 5w30.

very nice, i was gonna go with the amsoil, get it from my brother (dealer) told me not to worry about it in our trucks. he said its over priced and works a lot better for larger trucks if we're gonna spend that money!

 

5-30 won't hurt an engine that works best with 0-20 or 5-20. At operating temp, they'd be pretty much the same viscosity. Might be a little harder on the engine during cold starts, might shave a mile or two off the mileage, but nothin' major.

 

I'm more concerned about the thicker oils effect on the hydraulic lifters than I am on how hard it is to start.

 

As mentioned, once the engine gets to operating temp, the viscosity will be essentially the same, so if there is any effect, it will only be during the first couple minutes after turnover, and then he's in the clear.

I'm 99.9% sure he'll have no problems. Use what's in the manual, if you slip up slightly, just switch at next OC.

 

Um, no, he will have a 30 weight oil once its up to temp instead of the required 20 weight. The oil will be the same viscocity at start up.

My 07 says 0W-20 or 5W-20. What does your oil cap say?

 

5w-30. Looks like it changed in '07. Interesting.

My gas mileage went up a good bit when I switched from the previous owners quick lube 10W-30 to 5W-20 then again to 0W-20 (barely a change, but significantly better than 10W-30)

 

Wait, M1 isn't a "true synthetic? What does "Fully Synthetic" on the bottle mean??

 

That would make sense. VVT-i was added in 07, which would necessitate the need for thinner oil, perhaps.
