I have had 2WD Toyotas ('84, '94, '06, '10, '14) since 1984 ... I have never had a bit of trouble ... no, I have not crawled over rocks, high degree climbs ... I have driven beaches in Va to FL .... logging trails in Maine ... snow covered back roads in upstate NY ... they have all fit my needs.

I have upgraded each time ... this latest is a '14 Prerunner TRD Off-Road ... granted I have had it a short time I was told the ride would have been a little harsher than the SR5 or Sport ... I am not the least disappointed.

I agree with after time is considered it is more expensive. But the exception to that is someone that enjoys thoroughly enjoys working on vehicles. Like me. Working on a car or truck is my release. When everything is wrong in the world or I'm just plain down. I can go take something off my truck replace it or rebuild it. And by the time I'm done everything is right and there are clear skies. I don't suggest anyone do it if they have to have their truck back in a few days no. Because something as extensive as this needs to have its time taken and make sure everything is good before you turn that key the first time.

What's ridiculous or lame is telling people what they should or shouldn't do with their own trucks.

Idk. Some people need to realize that others can't get a 4x4 considering finances. Even tho its a bit more. Every dollar counts to some people.

I will take the most rancid, creamy, burrito fueled dump ever to leave these cheeks on both of your trucks.

    It's not a 4x4.

Really though nothing is wrong with it, it's an extremely capable truck. I drive one for 10 years and got it stuck twice from my own stupidity. (Both of which 4x4 would have kept me from or got me "un stuck" in a heartbeat) You just have to know the limits of the truck.

I never used mine as a true "off road" truck but it took me about any place I wanted that was not on pavement and then some. A lot of times I had wished I had that extra "security" of the 4x4 model, but white knuckle driving skill got me through. If you have no need for 4x4 and don't like the look of the normal 2x4 or need the extra hauling capacity, the Prerunner is the perfect fit, but it is no 4x4 and will never be able to do things a 4x4 can do locker or not.

I'm sure I've posted this somewhere else pretty recently, but just to reiterate... My truck, 2wd with the ALSD, is perfect for just normal driving and the occasional venture off the pavement. I forgot who it was that posted about the prerunner getting overtaken by the PT cruiser, but just on that note... I live in Oklahoma, we get snow a few times a year, sometimes over a foot, and in the NE part of the state, a LOT of hills. Only time I've ever had trouble was when the truck had been sitting for the entire duration of one of the worse snowstorms we've had and I had to dig out of the driveway a bit. This year in particular I was particularly impressed with how well I could get around, some weight in the back + Snow rated tires + Common sense will get you a long way. I've never not been able to get somewhere I need to go. I've actually taken my truck offroad too. Have I had to be pulled out a few times? Yep, didn't diminish the fun of it at all though. I remember going with a couple of my friends that had modified Jeeps and I was following them fully myself to get stuck almost immediately, and I didn't! Given it wasn't the most hardcore stuff, but I sure did impress my friends! Anyway, I'll echo what everyone else has said; buy what you need. You can have fun in any of these trucks, anything's more fun than FWD in my opinion. :)

Ha, nope I am here. Interesting replies in this thread....

My last truck was a 93' Toyota p/u 4banger reg-cab, so this is more than enough truck for me. It feels gigantic compared to my old one. I see vids on here of guys climbing boulders and going through some crazy stuff, as impressive and fun as it is to watch that's just not something I've ever really been into.

Bottom line is they are all Toyota trucks, can't beat that.

Exactly. Shoot, I went from a 2001 Sentra to a 2013 Tacoma. I am stoked pre runner or not!

I bought my Prerunner to save money. I have no desire to offroad a truck, I don't live where it snows and I don't want the extra maintenance and cost associated with a 4x4. I get better gas mileage, pay less insurance, have less maintenance and still get the tow/load rating of the 4x4.

Buy what whatever suits your needs and be done with it.

If I still lived in Nor Cal, I would have kept the prerunner. Here in NC the clay can get slippery.
