Just took my 2013 4x4 dblcb in for this fix since it's been pinging bad on 87 and lightly on 89. Took about an hour to complete. Drove the truck back to work 90 degree day, AC running, hills, 1500 rpm and could not make it ping. I'll know more as time goes by, but it appears to have fixed the problem.

    side note:

The service tech told me he had never heard of this issue on Tacomas and was surprised that I had the TSB. Thanks OP!

My issue popped up about 6-8 weeks ago. Had my truck in twice for service to look into the issue. I stopped in again this past Saturday after the knock was happening the entire morning. The service manager checked for recent TSBs and found one for spark knock. He took me right in and did the computer flash. Upon completion he told me the noise was still there but that the truck should "learn" and the noise would dissipate over time. I pulled out of the dealership and the noise was gone, no more spark knock since and it's been 2 full days and I have been driving under the same conditions as previously noted when the niose was occurring. Keeping my fingers crossed that all remains well.

I've got this going on with my 2013. Looks like my list of to-dos at my 30k mile service just got one longer. They're going to need my truck for a couple days at this rate! Haha. Thanks to the OP and the others that have supplied feedback.

You're welcome, but I can't take full credit for this, as it was posted previously in a different thread. The only thing I did was make a separate thread so that people would be aware of the TSB as well as be able to leave feedback. ;)

it is a ping, not piston slap. how to define engine ping as a sound,
it really sound more like a knock than a ping but both describe the same thing

it sounds like any other engine ping

this is a mild ping on mild acceleration or hill when hot out....just a low rpm, 'under load' thing

that goes away if you mash harder on the pedal or use 93 octane

I am gonna get mine reflashed next oil change

You're welcome, but again the info was posted previously, and I only made a separate thread to help people be aware of the potential fix. :)

Good evening everyone. I'm new to the forum, but have been reading many threads over the past year and thought I'd share my thoughts on this TSB. I purchased my '13 Baja about a year ago and have had the pinging issue for many months (if not from the very beginning). My dealer performed the TSB about a week ago and it seems the ping has been eliminated. However, I'm a little concerned that my fuel mileage may be down. I'll need another week of driving (and another tank) to know for sure. Power does not seem to be negatively affected. Prior to the re-flash, I was forced to run premium fuel in order to lessen the ping, but that never stopped the problem.

I have strong opinions on how Toyota has handled my situation over the past few months, but I'll keep those opinions to myself. On a positive note, the build quality of the truck is very respectable, I love the ride quality and appearance of the Baja and I haven't had any other issues with the truck (other than Bluetooth taking forever to hook-up).

This forum has been very educational and I've enjoyed learning from the many posts I've read. I'll try and update my post once I get a better feel of the fuel mileage situation.

    Have a great night!

I had recently posted a thread about this issue as well as many others. Glad to see that a TSB was out for this issue. I will having this done in the next couple of days. Will report back after a tank or so to see if issue is fixed.

I'd also like to note that I have put four tanks of premium 93 and still would have this pinging on occasion. Hoping this helps!

Thanks for the feedback. Are you calculating your mileage based on odometer reading & gallons purchased at time of fill-up?

so I just went on you tube and found this, apparently that tricky heat shield rattle wasn't a heat shield.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA0cH_vRABg

so mine pings almost this bad and has been that way for about a year(aprx 35k), what has me worried is I noticed about a mouth ago that when I shift hard above 5k rpm I get a puff of black smoke. Oh, and my last oil change came out two quarts low 7.5k interval, does this sound troubling, because it's got me feeling worried. only mod is a afe intake. do I sound screwed? not to sure what kind of damage I could have done never even been around a pinging vehicle before.

Dropped the truck off @ 12:45pm CST. Gave the TSB to service advisor and they drove me back to work.
Called me back at 1:20pm and said truck was ready. Won't be able to get it until after work this evening. We shall see...fingers crossed

Did you bring the truck in and show them the pinging running regular unleaded fuel?

Ok - so you're methods are correct. Sometimes people say they think fuel economy on a vehicle has changed based purely on "how far they drive on a tank of fuel," which we know isn't accurate enough.

Yep please keep us updated on your fuel economy if you will.

    Thanks!
