Im studying engineering and built a potato gun too! lol. But I powered mine by a 200,000 volt tazor. And although mine is not as sophisticated, it went 300 yards as well. :D Good engineering. So anyway, i was pulled over by a large field one night and a cop just so happened to drive by. He thought I was dumping. When I had seen him coming, i toseed it into he field. But when he searched my truck he found a potato, the stick, and the cap. He said "ok now, wheres the potato gun" so I just got it and he took it away. Funny thing is, they were filming for cops. So the people were filming me and my two buddies. We were kinda schooling the cops though. The cop tried showing off for the camera and ended up tazing his hand! hahaha:p So yea, that wasnt aired on cops. But I hear here in California you can get a felony for possessing one. I guess I was lucky.

I like when cops are cool about stuff when you're just having some harmless fun. This guy sounded like a cool cop.

He was actually a jerk. They were 2 young cops. Only reason I told him where the spud gun was is because I had a 40 like 20 minutes earlier and I was like a week away from being 21! He could kinda tell I was drinking and did some eye exercises. So rather than get a ticket for that I just surrendered the gun. Only reason I got out of it scotch free is because as they were finishing up I noticed they were Rialto PD and my good friends dad is a luietenant :) So I mentioned him and some other stuff and they left almost instantly. haha

Cool story. It sucks the cop tazed himself...I think it would be cool to be on Cops. I think you can put that on your resume.

Actually, you probably would not have gotten away had they kept the tape. That's one of those interesting busts that would make TV and they are not usually set free.

This is the second one my buddy has built (in the past few months). He is on a forum site like TW and said guys are serious into this stuff. Being an engineer, he has developed some ideas that no one on the site came up with. He refuses to do a "how to" build. I'll post up a picture of it when I can get one.

It has a built-in propane tank that injects propane. It is a chamber system that ensures you are getting PURE propane (no air). His first gun was held under the handed but this one will be held like a rifle (which is why he is rebuilding it).

    Pretty cool stuff.

So does it combust to propel the potato? If so that is some pretty poor engineering haha

Of course it combusts to propel the potato...how else would you launch a potato 300yrds?

Anyway, he has some type of valve system to allow enough air to enable it to ignite. I don't think pure propane can ignite without the air.

    Nope, it can't without air.

It's not all that important to keep the chamber 'air free'.

My husbands friend built a potatoe canon. The chamber had a lid at the back. Open the lid, spray AquaNet (works best) hairspray in there and quickly put the lid back on. He had a BBQ grill ignitor in it with a push button. The potatoe (being of proper size) was wedged in there to seal things up. Aim and press button to ignite. BOOM!!
    Nothing critical about it....

Compressed air. I have a portable potato gun that will easily shoot 200 yards and is only 3 1/2 feet tall. Compressed air and electric or mechanical actuators with a diaphragms is the only way to go. I have made quite a few propane and hair spray guns in the past, and well, they suck compared to using compressed air.

Actually Janster, fine tuning that fuel ratio will have a dramatic effect on the end result. It's similar to the carb on a race bike. It has to have the right fuel to air ratio to utilize it's full power. Too much air and it runs lean. Too much fuel and it runs rich.

Exhausting spent gasses from the chamber (also similar to a bike) is also important on a cannon. In this case, he is using a battery powered fan to clear the chamber.

Another cool addition is a scoring feature inside the barrel. It scores the potato to ensure a proper seal to the barrel walls (potatoes are not all perfectly round).
