BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
If they're selling something ask for their vendor permit; if they don't have one, call the cops.

If they are bums, call the cops.

Video is an awesome idea and just might give us all a laugh, too!

Try the train horn door bell rig, and if that fails have your wife answer the door with the glock on her hip and ar in a sling on her.

If you have grass in the front with sprinklers then try this.

Connect a motion sensor to your front sprinklers. Turn the sprinklers so they spray directly on the walkway to the front door. Once someone walks past the no soliciting or no trespassing sign the motion sensor turns on the sprinklers and the salesperson gets soaked.

If you don't have a hip holster for the glock, get one. Answer the door with your hand on the Glock in holster and turned away from solicitor where they can see it, but not grab it. Say "I'm not interested. This is your first and only warning to stay off of my property." Then shut the door.

The best thing that has worked for us is a sign on the door that says
"sleepy baby and barking dog. Please dont knock".

We had that on the door for a year and not one door to door person. We took it down and within 3 days we had them back at the house!

The thing is, the ones that we get in our area are not even local. They are hired in the dallas/Ft worth area and take a van load up here to our city and they hit each neighborhood once. Ive never seen the same people more than once.

Either put the "sleepy baby, barking dog" sign up or just ask for their vendor permit. 9 times out of 10 they wont have one and will just walk away when you ask.

Having served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I can tell you we always tried to be respectful of people's wishes. If you answer the door and wave a gun or something, we left and usually laughed about it. If people didn't want us there, I always preferred them telling us politely, instead of cussing us out or anything like that. That just pissed me off. We weren't selling anything though, and no, WE ARE NOT Jehovah witnesses.
On a side note, I kinda like the motion sensor sprinkler idea. Or the remote controlled squirt gun. Wouldn't get you in trouble with the law, but still proves your point... and is extremely hilarious.

If you are worried someone is casing your house, call your local PD and request some extra police presence in the area. They are usually willing to at least drive by a couple times during the day.

THIS ^^ Is awesome lol , OP I really don't have anything for you as it is a rental, you might have issues with both the local PD and the Base if you do overt things. Something cheap you can do is pin or use dowel rods for the windows and change a few screws in the door hinges and jamb with longer ones to reach the studs. Be very careful not to bow the door frame when tightening. Post the signs and ignore the bell if you can.

What is the chance of talking to the management of the rental and either cancel the lease and move since you and your wife "Feel Unsafe" or move to another property in a different area they manage. I did this once while in the Military down in Austin, Tx rented an apt places looked ok was good for about 3 months some sketchy folks moved in to several apt's near by. Cops every other night ensued we went to the management and told them it is not a safe area etc they let us out of the lease kept half the security deposit. It might be worth a try if you can.

I have a sign very similar to this up, and still get people knocking. I disconnected the doorbell so at least it doesn't bug us or make the dog bark.

Thing I don't understand is, do people who have signs like this up actually buy something from someone who ignored their request? Doesn't seem worth it to me if I were slinging crap door to door.
