I have had five first year redesign vehicles and have had no trouble except for a 97 F150. Lots of bugs on that one. I have also had two Toyotas, one Subaru and one F150 first year redesigns with no problems. Seems like the last two years of a design run have had the most issues. Seems like the last two years of the Tacoma have had more issues than the first two years of this design.
I will take a close look at the Colorado and may take a chance and buy one. I have been waiting for a redesign Tacoma but still no redesign. Same engine, same looks , same vibration and shudders, same squeaky driver seat.
I hope the Colorado sells well to force a new Tacoma and Frontier redesign.

I think the 2015 Colorado/Canyon is just cosmetic changes to the models before US production was halted in 2009(?). So its not exactly a "new" design.

The article was written by somebody who was unfortunate to own one of the cars plagues by the Honda auto transmission problems from 99-2003. The writer has an axe to grind against Honda. Somebody who owned one of the Toytas in the "unintended acceleration" recall might have a similarly poor view. Neither one single experience proves the brand is bad.

Same with your wifes experience, its a one off. When I met my wife she drove a 2001 Corolla. She hated it and called it a lemon. It just had a few issues due to her not maintaining it... most I fixed cheaply and we got 5 more years out of it. Before that car she had driven a 90s Camry that once blew its cooling system and stranded her in the middle of an intersection. Needless to say she didn't love Toyota at that point.

But yet if you look at Industry wide data driven reliability surveys (Consumer Reports, JD Power, TrueDelta) Toyota/Lexus usually ranks first... with Honda/Acura coming in second or sometimes third behind Porsche or Benz.

Between myself, my wife, my parents and her parents... going back to the 80s I can count about a dozen Hondas (mostly Civics from a 77 to an 07, 3 accords 82/87/00, one pilot), one Acura, 4 or 5 Toyotas (couple Camrys, Corolla, Tacoma), one Nissan (80s Pathfinder), 2 Dodges (70s van, 87 charger), two Fords (90s Explorer and taurus), a number of Chevys (couple Suburbans, Yukon, Venture van), a couple of Pugeots (my Dad was into them in the 80s) among others.

Of all these vehicles other than our 85 Civic that had a valve problem at 90k I cant recall any of the Hondas or Toyotas having serious issues that you couldnt blame on milage and wear. That Camry my wife had the cooling problem with was over 10 years old at the time. We drove the 85 Civic to 280k before it blew the head gasket. I think my Dad managed to get 180k out of a Camry timing belt without breaking through some miracle. My 82 Accord rusted out so bad it failed safety at 15 years old (15!)... but that was before they started galvanizing bodies.

OTOH the Nissan developed a fuel tank leak and almost caught fire on us. The Ford Taurus DID catch fire, due to a power steering line defect that blew open on the exhaust. Its digital dashboard also tended to burn out every couple years and it had its head gaskets go - but in this case they died early at 80k, not due to age like the 250k Honda. The Explorer had all the bad Explorer problems you remember from the Firestone tire debacle. I remember specifically a swaybar link braking and you felt like it was going to rollover in every corner. One of the Suburbans tried to kill my Dad when the rear diff let go and an axle shaft walked out driving down a big hill. My Moms Chevy Venture has been nothing but constant problems, especially brakes.

The '87 Dodge was shockingly good for reliability considering the reputation and the fact it had 220k. The 70s Dodge Van was a disaster.... but I wont count that against them as its so far back.

That CarComplaints site is only as good as the users who report into it... which seems to be a pretty small survey size. I found its exspecially interesting there is not a single model from some of the problem prone German brands like VW and BMW - as those are the only ones Ive ever met somebody IRL who has lemoned!.

Id stick to CR, JD, etc:

My father had a 2000 Accord. Trans lasted to 375k. He gave the car away to a friends son once he rolled 500k. Thing is still running on the orginal motor.

I don't think there was a diesel in the 2009 model.

I'll be interested in seeing the shifter on the new Ridgeline. I had one the first year they came out. I was towing a 19' travel trailer and the Honda would hunt gears constantly, shifting between 4th and 5th every 20 seconds, regardless of speed (50-70) or grade. The shift controller had L, 2nd, Drive and the OD button when pressed dropped the trans into 3rd. There was no way to lock out 5th. That's what got me to switch to Tacoma. I love the shift controller. Pulling the same trailer, when the Tacoma started to hunt (which was never as bad as the Honda) I'd drop to 4th and no more hunt. So unless Honda addressed that with the new gen I'd rate it as unacceptable. Chevy had the same issue with the Allison trans so they added manual mode with a +/- button on the steering wheel.

One other thing I'd look at is if they still stick the spare tire in the bed trunk. No access if the bed is full of gravel and you get a flat.

That is a good point. To be honest, I was impressed when I saw the spare tire go into the bed, but now that you mention it, you're right. Plus, you're more likely to need that spare when you're hauling/working and won't have access to the bad. Seems like a bad move, but surely they can fix that. Would just need another access panel, right?

My 03' accord was a nice mid sized sedan. The transmission was smooth and smart when it came to knowing what gear I wanted. But that being said. The tranny was starting to slip and it had only 65K on it, the next poor sucker that buys it will probably have it fail on him in no time ( the tranny issue is well known for the 03 year, they have since addressed it). Not to mentions the garbage brakes they put on the accords. Warped rotors galor. Other then that, great car. Traded mine in for the Tacoma. Have a pilot as well, that thing is awesome, great all around suv.

I'm curious as to why everyone is going crazy about Honda.... Honda doesn't make trucks, they make truck imitations or "trucks" built on car platforms, none of which are even close to being acceptable off road, or even could be considered a truck. And I thought this thread was to talk about trucks not your mommy's accord, lol.

Obviously you missed the part of the new Ridgeline. Though I agree the old Ridgeline was not a truck the new one (from the the information recieved) looks like it will have a little more promise than the old one.

That is where the Honda speak came from. It's a forum and as far as I know... you can talk about whatever you want. ;)

Oh ye of little faith. They won't have 365 recalls a year. NTSB doesn't work near that number of days. 360 maybe. :D

Actually, most government agencies have to conform to statutes and regulations that require a bidding process for any purchase over a certain dollar amount. I worked in government for 36 years in NJ and any purchase over $10,000 required a bid process. And you had to go with the low bid unless you could prove the low bidder didn't meet the specs. Purchases from $3,000 to $10,000 required three price quotes. For vehicles, the state did a huge bid that any local gov't. agency could purchase off of. As long as the vehicle met your needs, the state contract was almost always cheaper and easier than doing a separate bid. There were also cooperative purchasing agreements between some jurisdictions that enabled certain agencies to purchase off of another agencies contract, which saved money in redundant bidding.
