I have seen the Hilux and know that it is too expensive and little to impossible to get the diesel turbo Hilux in the states. But, what about any other Toyota truck with a diesel engine? OR, replacing the engine in my 2010 V6 Tacoma? What diesel engine could I get/use. I want to be able to get 30+ MPG and keep for 300K miles.

www.dieseltoys.com if you got $25k to blow on a motor, or stick with your reliable 1GR.

With sufficient cash, knowledge and time...anything is possible. If I could pick one right now I would go for the Cummins 4bt. Bulletproof and reliable. If you are considering a diesel swap it is safe to say (hopefully) that money shouldn't be the issue. You will also need to consider sufficient suspension mods in the front to handle any weight from a diesel donor.

+1 on the cummins 4bt! you would most likely have to beef up the font end as far as the frame and motor mounts to handle the torque. If you end up swapping it would be really cool if you did some sorta write up with lots of pics! Good luck with you decision!

For $25K it would not be an option. What other diesel trucks will get 30+ MPG? They all seem to be 2x the price in maintenance and don't seem to pay off.

It will be in a Tundra before it happens in a Tacoma and it ain't happening in either until hell freezes over.

Mercedes inline 5 turbo diesel from the late 80's can be tuned up to around 300 hp maybe more with a little bigger snail. Seen a few pickups with that swap on the web, and one drifting station wagon video also.

Between the increased fuel costs, decreased fuel milage, decreased reliability and cost of maintainace diesels are no longer worth the investment. Diesels today are not what they were 20 or even 5 years ago. Especially in a light duty truck.

Decreased mileage? And i would say maintenance (not repairs just general maintenance) is a wash when compared to a gasser maintenance.

Compared to diesels 10-20+ years ago, yes decreased milage. I say that because many people still have older diesels in mind when they talk about the modern and future stuff. It's not the same animal. The EPA has effectively spoiled all the benefits of diesels in light duty trucks

Dieseltoyz claims 28 mixed mpg on the 3.0 d4d and its "newer" and about a 50% increase at 10% more in cost still nets a 40% fuel savings, it may not be double but if the price was right, I'd take it. Not to mention the almost unlimited, relatively easy/cheap modes of power increases.

Not this crap again. With that said, explain how the "40%" in fuel savings justfies the exta cost. And with that, tell us how many miles will need to be driven by said truck just to break even versus the exta cost.
