Thats not what I asked. The "putchaser" can/can't do what they want - I was asking the economic side of things...the so-called 40% increase does not justify purchasing it based on that alone, due to increased cost.

A supercharger doesn't make economical sense either , nobody gets all bent out of shape when somebody gets a supercharger but every single diesel thread gets shit in

Lol. That was awesome. I had one of these in high school. 82 240d. 4spd stick. Slowest, most gutless tank I've ever driven. Seeing that thing drifting makes me smile. Makes a helluva racket too!

Not getting bent out of shape. People are spewing that the diesel gets better mileage but aren't putting the numbers out as to justify the extra cost to have said engine. Would I like more power? Sure, but don't try to sell the extra mpg when it would take, what 100K - 200K, before any savings are seen. That's the point I was making, not what should/shouldn't be done.

In my situation i would only do it once i needed a new motor, so i would need to use the difference in gas motor replacement and the 25k from diesel toys and, but if u spend $75 a week on gas thats a $30 savings at 40% which would add up to $10000 in a touch over 6 yrs. So even at the full 25k it would pay for itself in 15 years, not taking alternative fuels i.e. biodiesel savings in to consideration.

Well I agree with you that what we really need is a factory diesel / electric hybrid option

That assumes that over that 10-15 year time frame the cost of ownership (maintenance and repair for both) are the same. I don't see that being cheaper in a diesel.

I dont see it being more in one. I bought a toyota to last forever, if and when that doesnt pan out ill be putting in something that will. 300,000 miles or so down the road of course.

Haha.... all this talk about swaping a diesel in a tacoma, better this, better that, no one posting in this thread is going to do a diesel swap. I call bullshit. Put your money where your mouth is and prove us all wrong!
