Best part was he still thought this was warrantee. When I said no he wanted to call mega lol. He either fell on it on a rock or sledge hammer . Or dropped it out if a tree stand or something.

I'll answer on the assumption I know specifically which response you're responding to.

If the chamber becomes dirty enough the headspace becomes smaller and can in theory but there is a lot riding on that.

For sample are you using a NATO 5.56 chamber which has a lot more room for such things in which a properly gassed mid will not no. Unless of course you're reloading your ammo not to SAAMI spec and are shoulder bumping back only .004" for accuracy and not overworking your brass the there is less room for a dirty chamber. However you'd probably be using a .223 Wylde chamber which is tighter than a 5.56 but more accurate and can still run 5.56 ammo.

Basically tighter chambers are more accurate while looser chambers are more reliable. There is always a balance and it's why I ask people what are they going to use their rifle for when I start building.

With that said my rifle is a mid gas, a 223 Wylde chamber that I run wolf 5.56 through all day with no issues. And when I teach or run a class I'll put 1000 rounds through it without cleaning it no problem. So a lot depends on proper spec proper building technique (there is a difference between building it in your garage on an assembly line or one person who builds 100s of these by hand start to finish) and good parts.

I meant in the deformation of the upper, but I your above response was also helpful

Oh yeah if you look at the upper receiver with the straight edge next to it you can see it impedes into the space that the carrier slides. It was an obvious hang up when I was hand cycling it.

I ended up replacing the receiver for him.

Then he called to say it ran fine with factory ammo but not hand loads. Hmm what are you loading. It was under powered hand loads. After that was worked out good to go.

18" 223 Wylde chamber barrel with rifle length gas.

There is a science to it all. Had a similar instance with a 6.8 I built. The guy was loading his 90 gr bullets that worked great but would short stroke with the 110s. He was using a powder that worked great in the 90 but burned to fast to properly cycle the 110s. It would completely burn up pushing the heavier bullet before the gas port not allowing enough pressure to cycle the BCG. Simple fix but he was beating his head against the wall trying to figure it out. I'm not smarter than that guy I've just dealt with the issue before because of how many if these I work on and build where he had only his own experience to deal with. Just less exposure. I love these threads and frequent them because I feel I can educate but I also get tons of feedback on them and people say things I would have never thought up on my own.

A thread like this is exactly what made me bring out the bare bones LPK. A LPK you can pick what you do and don't need so you don't have all those left over parts that cost you money you could spend on ammo.

I assume it was a forged upper not billet?

It was a mega forged upper. Looking at it though and the damage I'm pretty sure a billet would have suffered as well. It was like someone hit it with a hammer using a punch. The force was directed into one spot. Remember they are only aluminum. All the force is contained the BCG, bolt and barrel extension.

He never admitted to what he did. He just kept claiming he has no idea how it got there. He'd had it 6 months and never complained about it having issues before hand or that the box was damaged or I may have thought the shipping company but honestly no idea.

Please do. If you compare the prices of all the parts you'll find the pricing is really good. I'm constantly restocking them now

lol I love them as a principle but it's finicky in an AR simply because you are retrofitting a system that wasnt designed to be piston operated.

My 5.45x39 piston AR performs flawlessly. My 7.62x39 AR is really finicky.

I made the powder mistake years ago with 8lbs of Swiss "4198" when I first started reloading. Very frustrating at the time, but a good lesson on the importance of understanding your burn rate vs. Barrel length, gas length and reciprocating weight. Learned it all while trying to figure out one problem!

So did you ask the guy how tall the building was that he dropped it from to cause it to deform like that? Maybe it got tangled in the propeller of his boat.

I liked my piston gun because it was easy to clean. No scraping - just wipe. Sold it long ago, but am intrigued by the new Adams micro regulator and low mass carrier. They're making some neat looking stuff now.
