Had mind done yesterday. When running on 87 it idles much smoother and is much more drivable in the 1500-2000 RPM range. There was a noticable difference when running 87 to 91 before the reflash. Especially with the summer blends here in California.

Perhaps a stupid question, but would you have this re-flash done if the truck fell into the 'years effected category' and it wasn't pinging to make sure it didn't start pinging in the future?

It runs fine. I have a Scan gauge and haven't seen any loss in milage. If anything it'll be better since I haven't had to put my foot in it as much while in OD at lower RPMs just for it to get out of its own way...

I don't know why everyone's so scared to get the reflash. It's designed to make it run BETTER. There's a lot more to it than just retarding the timing. With modern ignition you can change the spark advance at the bottom without affecting top end. Spark advance just doesn't go off RPM or a fancy vacuum advance anymore... I'm sure they changed a combination of things in the reflash. A/F ratio, exhaust cam timing, ignition curve, shift timing just to name a few...

I had a SVT Focus before and Ford came out with two different reflashes while I owned the car. Each one improved the driveability of the car and farther refined it.

    Thanks for info.

Good feedback, thank you. I'm also in California, so I know what you mean about summer fuel. Off Topic: Guy on a bufffffalooooo...ok had to do that.

Not a stupid question by any means. How many miles on your truck? I would ask the service manager at your dealership, and see what he says. According to someone else on this thread, this falls under a category that allows the TSB to be performed under warranty up to 86,000 miles. You have the option to wait/see what happens between now & that time.

Thanks for the Scangauge feedback. Once I return from my Mt. Whitney excursion that is fast approaching, I'm bringing in my Trusty Tacoma for this T SB. Thanks for the mini-education regarding modern ignition & ECM calibration.

I only have 3600miles on my truck. Good point; I've got another 82k miles to see whats up. Thank you.

You're welcome. If I remember correctly, my engine still ran without any pinging noice at 3,600 miles. I believe my issues started somewhere close to 15,000 to 20,000 miles?

really im scared about mileage.... the 4.0L is very tempromental when it comes to mpg... my current configuration i get decent mpg (19 or so mpg in 50/50 and 21-22 on the hwy) id just hate for it to be flashed and then bam crappy mpg cus they retarded timing and added more fuel.

Does anyone have the ping in a manuel or is it isolated to automatics?

Anybody heard or find info if they have a supported S/C flash to fix the ping?

Who had the TSB performed, and still has pinging? There is 1x vote for "TSB Performed & still has pinging regardless of octane used."

I don't remember seeing someone comment in this thread that they had TSB performed & still have pinging??? I've only seen positive comments post-TSB so far  ???

also, @Del Scorcho you say it drives better. Are you saying it downshifts less in 5th lock up?

I'm starting to hear a sound from my engine and it doesn't sound well. Almost like it's bogging or something, anyways I think it's the ping. So how do I go about getting the dealer to so this reflash thing? I'm at about 26k milage. Thanks I'm advance for the help.

Has anyone gone in for the flash / pinging solution with an oil catch can installed? Did the dealer say anything about it, or give you any problems?

I'm at 6,500. I picked mine up last year in July and didn't hear any pinging all last summer. Heck, I could lug it pretty good and it was surprisingly quiet. This summer it started only when it would get hot out - above 80/85 or so regardless of which gear I'm in with 87 octane. As long as I'm around 1500-2500ish rpm and pressing on the skinny pedal a bit, it'll ping. Worse with the AC on but that would be expected due to the compressor load on the engine. I have yet to try higher octane but if the TSB fixes this and doesn't hurt power or MPG, I'll have it done.
