gas price high, before you stop driving tacoma?

the gas price keep rising, how high you guys going to let it keep going before you stop driving the tacoma?

$8? $9?

It would take alot for me. I usually burn about 40 gallons of gas per week right now in my Explorer for work on my dime and I am sure it would be about the same with a Taco as well but if the prices continue to rise I am sure that the gov't allowance for mileage will also have to increase as well for deductions....either way it will still make a buck for you in the end.

 

I don't use my Taco as my daily driver, typically use it on the weekends as a work/chore/recreational vehicle. I drive a Prius as a commuter and for weekend jaunts/road-trips where the features of a truck are not needed. I'd like to drive the Taco more, enjoy it (although the Prius is fun to drive, just in a very different way) and like having a higher vantage-point and a bit more metal around me, but it's hard to justify when the Taco gives me 20mpg average, and the Prius close to 50.

I think that the current cost of gas (roughly $3.60 national average) has started to create strain on many people, and it's going to get worse when (not if) it hits $4, $5, and higher.

 

hmmm, $4.50 a gallon where I am, I will never stop driving the Taco, I use mine for work (framer) and you cant beat this truck, 28mpg on the I4, next step down truck wise is the Ranger with the 2.4, or the B2300, but who wants to drive a Ford or a Mazda?

 

I just traded my Titan for a new Tacoma (I4 manual 4X4 access cab). I doubled my mileage. What else would I drive? I'm in heaven mileage-wise.

 

I stopped yesterday to get gas, 16 gallons was 66.50, around 3.98 a gallon I think. Luckily, for me, my employer pays for it. For now.

 

I was driving to work and the radio dj said... some people are paying more on gas than their car payments... that was a shock to me.

If it goes up to... $5 a gallon... like just like a 17 gallons fill up, going to cost $85!! times 4 times a month $340!!

 

yep, no doubt its getting bad. Something has to give, and it looks like its going to be demand as the reports continue to show that demand is decreasing as people are driving less and buying more fuel efficient cars and trucks.

 

If Gas gets to out of control like 6 or 7 bucks a gallon I will be driving my wifes Accord to work full time.

I hear Titans are horrible on gas and to think in 05 I almost bought one. Good luck with your new Taco man!

 

Looking back, gas was 1.99 when I bought my truck in Dec 04. Not like I'll stop driving it, knew this was coming. And thats why I got the Tacoma which can do most jobs I need it to and is relatively good on gas (around 20 mpg now). For trips where we dont need it, wifes car gets 33 mpg.

 

Yep I just dumped my 04 titan for the Taco. I miss the room and power, that thing was fast. I had a Banks exhaust, S&B intake and still couldn't manage better than 15/16 mpg on trips doing 75+. I would have kept it, but the quality of the early build 04s 05s scared me as I went thru 4 axle seals and Nissan did not want to replace my rearend and various other problems. i was sick of it, I tried so hard to keep it, thinking that the depreciation hit was not worth the trade in but if you can't have a dependable truck its gotta go.
And the trade in value of the V8s is decreasing fast, I got out a couple months ago, from what I've heard around here your in trouble with a V8 trade in wise, get ready to lose your arse bad!!!

I just got 20.3 mpg last tank..I'm happy with my descision. IDQs are going in this weekend and TRD intake is on the radar. No wonder they can't keep the tacos in stock around here..

 

I drive about 10,000 miles a year and I'm up to 25 MPG over the life of the truck ( 27.516 MPG on my last tank!) so 400 gallons a year.
If I were to drive a more efficient car instead of the Tacoma for 8000 miles of that and it could get 40 mpg that would save 120 gallons of fuel.

Insurance on an extra vehicle would cost about $700 and if it's not a shit box at least $300 in property taxes and registration so if I got the car for FREE gas would have to be $8.33 for me to break even on the fuel costs. I'd say gas would have to hit at least $16 a gallon before it would be worth even considering.

 

Although my truck is paid for and so is my other vehicle.. my monthly fuel cost is about $430/month and includes both vehicles (my wife doesn't fill up much). I live in the Central Valley of California and it can be up to $.15 cheaper where I live then where I commute to. I looked into public transportation to see how much it would save me if I completely stopped driving to work.. $160 savings not to drive (not accounting for oil changes and all that other stuff). That's still not enough savings for me because public transportation adds 3 hours to my day of non work time. It's also 3 hours less time with my family of which the oldest is 5. Can't put a price tag on having that family time after 9 hour days at work not including commute.

It's funny how many more hybrid's I see out here in California as well. I guess these people have high car payments as it is so trading out to a hybrid isn't much of a change car payment wise. Personally trading to a hybrid for me doesn't make sense if you're vehicle is paid off because you're still paying for fuel.. just less of it... the savings on fuel on a hybrid would have to go back into the bank to pay for service on the batteries which I hear is really expensive.

Bottom line.. for me the price would have to go a lot higher to make me completely stop driving. No way I'm gonna switch vehicles anyway since I pull a travel trailer in the spring/summer... more quality familly time that I wouldn't be without.

Do you honestly think gas prices will go to $8 or $9 a gallon? They won't even make it to $5 before it backs off.

They used to say that about 2 bucks a gallon. And lets not forget all the people who swore they'd quit smoking if the price went over that same $2.00 a pack

 

those were the days when you could drive forever on $5.
