Holy build FTW!



Took the truck out for a camping/kayaking excursion this weekend, new kayak rack did great. I'll post some details on the rack build shortly





Waterside camping FTW!

 

Here is the Kayak rack I made, it should be able to haul 3-4 kays with ease. I made the rack so I could keep the bed rack installed as most of the time I'll be camping when I'm taking the Kayak anywhere, otherwise I'd just load them in the bed.

My previous bed rack design was lacking in the mounting leg area so it had slightly crunched the top bed rails.


Plan was to fix this at the same time. Bed rack v1.5 was born. Cut the old mounting feet off (3" length of 3x3 angle iron.)


New mounts made (15" length of 4x3" angle iron), which allowed much more surface area for distribution of the weight.


Then started a little extra mounting with some 3/16" plate


Made quick disconnectable feet that tie into the bed box itself






Then proceeded on to make a rack for the kayaks with some left over steel I had and a receiver hitch I found on the side of the road




Rear rack disconnects so I can still use the swingout without having to remove the rack from the receiver hitch.


Put some gussets on the 90* bends


Welded on some tie downs


Slapped some paint on and it is finished, and it disconnects in about 2 minutes.




Since making it I have added some padding so the yaks won't get scratched, other than that it's working pretty well and it didn't cost me anything but a bit of my time to make.

Thanks Steve. It's not too bad, I used .120 wall tubing for the main cross bars and .083 for the supports so I'd say it weighs maybe 25 lbs per rack, not too bad really. I think I'm done adding tube to the back tho

After I did the shackle flip my current shocks were a little too short and the 6" shackle I had used was a bit too long so I went to work on fixing those issues. I've seen the shock relo kits that some people offer and I am not a fan of them, mainly because of the price and seconly people have issues with the tires scrubbing the shocks at full stuff and are forced to run wheel spacers. The final cost of everything I did (minus the shocks) was ~$75 and a bit of my time.

So I decided to inboard the shocks and retain the bed, here is the outcome:

In with the new, 12" stroke remote resi King performance series.


1/4" axle mounts should be able to take a decent beating

Top mount is home made with 3/16" wall tubing and 1/4" mounting tabs with bolted disconnects in case I need to change mounting angles






Resi mount, unfortunately the gas tank was in the way on the other side and I spent some time thinking of the best way to mount it and couldn't come up with anything so I just tucked the other resi up between the spare tire cross member and zip tied it


Ride height


Eventually welded another tab on to secure the bracket where the hard/soft brake lines meet at the axle, just kinda dangling here in the breeze . Also had to cut off and reweld a couple of the stock brake and ABS mount brackets so they didn't interfere with the new shocks.


Not quite full stuff or full droop but you get the idea, I may need to extend the bumpstops by an inch or so to keep the leafs from going into negative arch.




Here's a comparison shot and you can see I'm not even at full droop and with the 4" shackle and new shock setup I will get a decent amount of more travel compared to the old setup and it feels like the travel is causing less binding and is overall more fitting for the truck.

Was pretty happy with how it turned out and I haven't noticed any adverse effects of inboarding the shocks I've had the truck up to highway speeds and also some fire roads doing 20-30+mph and it feels about the same as with the old setup. I kept the old shock brackets on for now but might cut em off later if I get hung up on them. The shocks ended up around a 30* angle at ride height.

my 1st gen t4r doors are light as shit, I can hold them in place. But fuck, I cant imagine trying to swap those.
