Has anyone swapped a e-locker rear end for a regular 8.4"? I'm just worried how the ecu will handle a 8.4" rear end with out the locker

Are the housings even the same size?

No, housings are not the same. I'm simply swapping axles with some one who has a 8" elocker axle for my 8.4" axle. But he's keeping all his hook ups/switches and I'm ordering the harness and all from lowrange

The ecu has no idea what 3rd you are running. The harness just goes to a dash switch.

Never seen it done on a first gen, but there are a few 2nd gens who have done it when they got fed up with repeated failures. Check out HBMurphy. He isn't on here much anymore, but did it to his second gen.

So no check engine lights or anything will come on when that harness comes unplugged from the third?

The only thing that harness does is actuates the locker when you push the button. Your 8.4" doesn't have or need a harness.

I know, I'm swapping axles with a guy. I have a 8.4 non locker, he has a 8" e-locker. He wants to keep the switch and all so I'm going to buy a harness/Switch from low range. Then I'm giving him my 8.4 plus cash for his 8" axle. But he wants to make sure that after the switch nothing will go wrong with his ecu or anything.

I think what he is trying to do is swap the whole axle assembly and 3rd. Not swap the 3rd between axle housings.

I check this place from time-to-time and yes I have done it on a 2nd gen and it was one of the best upgrades I have. :) Boneyard housing and new ARB (2 pc not 3 pc) and new Sierra Gear R&P and install kit. Same axles, backing plates, etc. PM me if I can help.

IMO the only 'issue' with the ecu would be a stabilty control or anti-lock (very minimal) issue if the housing is wider since it would change the speed at which the wheels turn - If the housing is wider, at anytime the truck is not going in a straight line with no bumps, the inner wheel will turn less and the outer wheel will turn faster.

    Good luck.

OP not sure what your intent is, but if you keep an eye out you can get a full locker set up used for cheap and retain your current set up which has a stronger case and ring gear. My buddy was trading in his Taco and sold me his ECGS rebuilt third w/ARBRD129 (about 20k on it) and ARB compressor for around $700.

Good to see you Rodger! That part you helped me obtain is going in soon. Just waiting on gaskets now. Got all my bolts last week. Thinking of lightweight flywheel but notsure.

He has a elocker axle and has no need for locker. I have a non locked 8.4 and a need for locker.

Why not just buy an air locker for your current axel? That'd be so much less hassle

No it wouldn't be. Swapping an axle is pretty easy.

    :notsure:

Swapping a third takes minutes and a ARB compressor is pretty much plug and play depending on options purchased.

Swapping axles with someone is a logistical nightmare especially when neither party is experienced. One guy forgets a part and you're screwed.
