What entry level mountain bike do you guys reccomend? I was looking at the specialized hardrock sport.

The broken wrist thing is overrated :D Hope you're healed up real quick-I know how much that sucks.

Your photos are simply amazing! Love the Moab and Utah areas.

It's a good bike for the money. One down side is you might find yourself needing to make adjustments if you're riding a lot-mostly because of the lower end components on the bike.

Consider what you're riding is going to be like too. Investing a few more dollars if you plan to ride more might not be a bad idea. Or looking at a used dual suspension bike if you plan to ride more rough terrain.

Again, it's a good bike for the money.

Probably not the Diamondback. I haven't heard much good from them lately.

Trek, Specialized, REI (yup, them), GT, and even Giant all offer bikes in the ~$1000 range.

What bad things have you heard about the diamondback? I was reading some bike radar reviews an it seems like they dont like specialized at all.

Mostly quality related. Not what they once were.

Specialized gets no love because, as a company, their business practices suck.

You win at life! That is a beautiful bike and you own my favorite car and truck, and live where the trails are incredible to ride.

I bought my bike at REI, Cannondale 5 and paid $596 after taxes but it was on sale too, usually it's a $800 bike before taxes. It's a great entry level bike IMO. Giant, Trek, Gary Fisher are all great too, I've owned one of each over the years.

Damn! You guys wanna make me ride. Maybe I'll check Craigslist for a used one. What's everyone's opinion between a new cheaper bike against a used upgraded one?

    Yeah.
Of the Specialized line, the Rockhopper Comp 29 is the lowest I would go -- below that level you go down from a RockShox fork to a Suntour. Big difference. Going up to the Stumpjumper the price nearly doubles, but components get better.

From the Trek line, the X-Caliber 9 or the Superfly 5. The Giant line doesn't have anything at the same price point.

I think you can get better components if you buy a used bike, but it is always good to have it checked over by your local bike shop.

Lots of people buy new and dump their lightly used bikes all the time. There are deals to be had so look everywhere; Craigslist, Ebay and Pinkbike. I have purchased from all and as long as you know what to look for there's deals to be made. Even if it means buying a frame and a complete bike that's got a ruined frame and making a whole bike are just buy parts til you have a complete bike.

So far I've bought 2 bikes off of TW and have been very pleased.

If you are familiar with bikes then my suggestion is buying all the parts piecemeal and buying the components you want to put on the bike and make it your own. You have to have a idea of what you are doing though and what your needs will be with the bike.

I agree, if your looking at a bike, Pinkbike and VitalMTB are your best friends. Ive bought all my bikes off pinkbike used and have yet to be dissappointed! Some amazing deals on there (especially with all the new bikes coming out!!)

Here is my 2011 SC V10! Built it from the frame up and would recomend it to anyone looking at purchasing a new DH rig (considering the new 27.5 model is out, alot of these will be for sale at the end of the year for killer prices).

    Specs are as follows:
Frame - Med 2011 SC V10 (run it in 8.5" mode; 10 in the rear is too much) ;)
Rear Shock - CaneCreek Double Barrel Air
    Fork - 2011 Fox 40 Kasima
Wheels - Industry Nine Laced to Mavic ex721 (Soon 823 and tubeless)
Bar / Stem - Race Race Atlas (Soon to be renthal)
    Breaks - Formula R0
    Shifter / Der - Sram x9
Cranks - Saint with Renthal ring
Others- Thomson Post, Chromag Seat, Schwabby Magic Mary Tires (not pictured)
