I switch on the fly if I see soft sand up ahead or black ice. it's fine as long as you lay off the throttle while doing it. and not 4 low

 

The syncros in the case will allow you to shift into 4H on the fly as long as you are under 55 I think. I wouldn't suggest doing it all the time, you are engaging something that is standing still with something that is spinning at really high revolutions. It shouldn't hurt it too bad, but continued abuse like that could add up.

 

Everything is spinning equally unless you have manual front axle locking /unlocking hubs

 

Maybe that's more specific to me since I have to turn on ADD.

 

Thats why my jeep hurt so bad, they are auto lock hubs. But your trucks are really nothing more dry shifting a manual trans. if you aren't on the gas or using the engine to slow down it "should" work fine. I think tacome was just trying to troubleshoot which part of his system wasn't working. I wish I had on the fly sometimes. it would be nice to just click 4wd, roll over a soft spot or small hill then back to 2wd.

 

I had already established the 4wd front actuator was not engaging.

I pressed the one the fly button at 65 to see if I would get a warning and it did.

At idle and slight front and reverse movements I determind earlier that the button on the shifter is working however it's not making the transfer case actuator fully engage like before.

I will have it looked at and hopefully it's an easy fix like it needs lubed or adjusted.

It's a 2002 with 196k on it and I rarely use the 4wd so it's not an uncommon issue.

 

My excursion did the same. I've had to tap the actuator to get it to work. Now i just engage it every once in awhile just because.

 

Yes, I posted the card that is in our sun visors to show Toyota says up to 60 mph (62 in metric) is okay. I have engaged mine while driving 'fast' as well (hitting gravel when pavement abruptly ended). The reason I posted was that it was mentioned doing so at 65 mph, and while I think it would work above the recommendation, I just had to ask why one would wait until driving 65 or faster to then go into 4WD.

 

Anyone know a local resource for a good assortment of Jerry cans ? Anywhere in SD county ? Would rather buy local than ordering on the intraweb.

 

You mean like the old school steel ones ?? If so your best bet is going to be a garage sale or similiar, I think they're illegal in CA. any more aren't they ?? ....

You can buy the good Scepter spouts online, just can't order the cans. Seems stupid. I ordered the open spouts for my Roto-Pax cans without any problems.

Where did you find them? I couldn't get "good" spouts in Arizona for the Rotopax. They say they are all the same now.
