4.7 was one of my favorite engines. Very smooth, quiet and powerful.

I believe it came out around 1999 in the Land Cruiser and Tundra.
It became a lot better in 04 with the 5 speed tranny (same one in the Tacoma).

2015 won't be a major redesign, since you can order them already https://fleet.toyota.com/vehicles/tacoma.asp

Nothing's been said about 2016 one way or another.

2017 is when some major CAFE fuel economy requirements kick in, so expect new engines by then as a minimum (though could just end up being the 2GR-FE or -FSE).

It gets the same MPG's as some full sizes and it is pretty down on power compared to new engines?

Even if they added that new fangled stuff from the 4 Runner engine to the taco it wouldn't be as bad...

    Pretty much :D

My truck shows it's age a bit but the guts are all the same as a brand new truck 10 years later.

It was a great engine, but needing a timing belt every 90k was a bummer and relatively high maintenance by Toyota standards.... and it was an interference engine so you didn't want to skip it.

2016 from what I've heard will look like a 4runner/tacoma baby. Will also have a 3.5l V6 in place of the 4.0.

The motor was first put into 4runners back in 2002. So its pushing 13-14 years old and definitely needs upgrading. Fords 3.7L V6 is 300+ HP! Come on Toyota!

I was just in the dealer and was bs-ing with some of the sales / service guys. They think it'll be 2016 and we will see both a new gas engine and a Cummins diesel. They said Toyota already has some trucks equipped with the diesel for testing . They thought it would be the same engine that Nissan is putting in the Frontiers and not the 1KD-FTV.

Indeed! The small block Chevy was used for over 40 years and based on a design from 1955. It had some major changes, like adding an oil filter in 1956, but the basic block hung around for years.

Compared to other models in their class, they're pretty efficient.

But will it have heated mirrors? That's the REAL question.

Toyota has been teasing us with this Gen 3 Carrot for too long. What I have heard is that the new Gen 3 Taco will have a smaller V-6 than the current Gen. with Better fuel economy and more power. It seems fuel economy is the leading consideration with manufacturers.

However, I am trying to decide if I want to wait for the next generation Taco or purchase a new TRD Pro. Oh the agony of decision! I love the 4.0L V-6 as I consider it one of the beat engines made. And I consider the 2nd Generation Taco an incredible Truck.

    Tough Call

I agree man. Just what I heard. Not saying what he saw was set in stone at all but with styling seems legit as that's where all the vehicles are going. More boxy. More efficient motor. It's suppose to have more power/torque.
