well if/when i ever get around to it... i think i'll use a D44 out of a late 70's f-250. then pull off the knuckles and throw on a set of chevy 1/2 ton flat top knuckles. this would put the WMS-WMS at about 1" wider than the factory rear. throw a set of 1/2" wheel spacers on the rear and you've got matching widths on the axles. plus there are plenty of readily avaliable parts for these axles and plenty of people have done simlar swaps putting chevy outters on ford axles so its nothing new. i just did alot of research trying to find a good axle setup that had the right width and thats what i came up with.

yea the f-250 axle is a little wider than stock. but its an 8 lug also. once you pull those knuckles and throw on some chevy 6 lug knuckles it narrows it up just a touch and puts it just about right. plus the beauty of this is that you can run most all standard parts instead of having to have custom axles cut and whatnot.

if/when i ever do it i would never run anything larger than a 35 or 36 tire so there is no need to go with anything larger such as a D60. plus with that tire size the toyota rear should hold up just fine.

true, i am going 37" but i think i will still be ok with the right gears and inners. I also plan on beefing up my rear with longs

yea well living in VA they are really strict on height laws and whatnot... if i went any larger the truck would be to tall to legally drive on the street here....

if you retube it just make sure you do it back to a stock length. that way you dont have to custom order axles for it.

    question,

    I was contemplating today,

    scary thought yes,

Can i take all my d44 outer stuff, and get a diamond 8" housing and mate all my d44 outer stuff to the 8" housing?

obviously i would need to match OD on tubing and also get the housing with no ends.

    anything flawed with this?

yes you can do this. they have the option of building them this way from the start also... only thing with this is you are starting to look at having custom axles shafts made then.

everything just changed axle wise. cancelled the order for all parts for D44, except the reid racing knuckles, they already shipped :frusty:

I orderd a Diamond 8" set up... so far just will be getting the housing and complete outers for mock-up purposes, then will be getting all the rest once the SAS is complete.

I am way happier with this, yes it will cost me 2000 more dollars, but i will be 5000 times happier with 2 toyota elocked diffs and all that toyota sex under me.

If you are wondering how my radius arms will work now, I was able to find weld on wedges, so nothing is changing there.

i opened up exel and put all the D44 costs in a column, and then compared it to that of the toy diamond, the difference was not enough to go with the 44 over the diamond. There are too many benefits with diamond, 8" elock diff, 3rd member setup, 30 spline longs are a lot stronger than d44 stuff, diamond housing are SWEET.

the cost diff was a little over $1000 when i put an eaton elocker in the d44 and the retube.

to me, its worth an extra $1000 to have all that stuff, especially the elocked toyota 3rd, and the diamond housing

I was going to just put my chevy outers on an 8" diamond open end housing, but after a little reading, it was clear that it would be a waste of time
