Yea just heard it on the local news. Prayers for him. Guys got a heart of gold. His play has gone down hill as he gets older but he is a great motivator and teammate.

I'm surprised this guy wasn't snatched up earlier. He's not an amazing D-man, but he's a bottom 4 guy who can easily add a few points a year to your back end. He also has that upside of possibly getting his game back, because he's still young, and becoming a solid #2-3 guy for very little money. A team like Calgary or Winnipeg, where they could use a little offensive depth in there D, could of used him at 1.3 mil a year. I would of signed him for 5 million over 3, with some bonuses if he gets his game back, but Toronto needs less offensive D and more stay at home D.

The leafs need another offensive D if Franson is traded though. The only thing I dont like about having Franson is pushing Phaneuf to the left side where he does not play as well

He has shown that he see's the ice well and has a good, strong, and accurate shot. I never said he's going to be a top tier defender. Calgary just paid almost three million for a pylon (engelland) that can't score or skate. They should of looked at Del Zotto and paid less then they did for a guy who was a healthy scratch during the playoffs for the penguins.

No worries, I do the same thing all the time. It's easy to miss a word when you make a quick reply.

Phaneuf is not a bad defenseman. What he is, is not the same level of player that people would of expected give his numbers early on and his "C" on his chest. As a Toronto fan I have no major issues with Dion. He eats up minutes and for every bad goal he lets by he goes on to create one at the other end. 7 million is going to be the cost of any decent 1-2 defender in this new cba.

What Toronto needs to do is build a better system that allows Dion to jump into the play without his defensive partner getting burned all the time. When he was with Calgary he always had a top notch stay at home guy to back up his mistakes and make him a better asset. Playing on his strong side should and will help him out as well. No one is claiming Dion will ever be a top 10 defenseman in this league, but he's definitely a valuable asset that most teams could use on there top pairing.

Phaneuf haters make it seem like 20 minute plus defenders grow on trees, when quite simply they don't. Just ask Edmonton :D.

This is so true. I have said it many times. People who say he sucks don't ever see the shit he has to do. Plays with a 4-5-6 guy forced into a top line role all the time but he gets the slack. Before he hurt his shoulder last season he was like +21 playing against Crosby, ovechkin, stamkos, and every other top line in the east. He never publicly said it but with like 20 games to go he got hit hard and left a game for a bit. Then missed every practice to end the season. That's when the team had a downfall. They rely on him way too much

thats messed up. I work with a few guys on blood thinners and ya theres no way they could play hockey. One of them cant use force for anything without busting an eye blood vein. Sad a good player cant finish his career like that
