OK, so this is only my second post on the forum. Im brand new to Tacomas, so don't shoot me. I just had my 2013 double cab TRD lifted 6" with a Rough Country kit and 35's put under it. I called a local shop this morning to schedule a time to have my front and rear diff gears changed to 4:56's. The shop tech told me he will need to know what size diffs are in the truck before he can order parts. Toyota didn't use different size diffs in these did they?

Thanks for the clarification! I do have the TRD Sport. Looks like that makes all the difference. When I bought mine the dealer told me the only way I could get the 6 speed std. was in the Sport. That's the whole reason I went that direction.

    Thanks again.

FWIW you can get a 6 sp O/R version, the dealer is full of shit.

Well that sucks the big one! I looked at two different dealers. All I could find in 6 speed was Sport. I hate the scoop, but dealt with it in order to get the 6 speed. Both dealers told me that I could not get 6 speed O/R in the U.S

Wow, sounds like the salesmen really knew their stuff. While they seem to be getting more uncommon, they do make the 6spd in o/r models. As far as i know, the only models you CAN'T get a 6spd in are the longbeds. Love my manual. For the record, if you're spending the money like it looks like you are, then you can make a Sport as strong, if not stronger, than the o/r. 8.4 is stronger rearend, just install an ARB when you're puttin those gears in!

Throw a locker in when you get the gears and you've essentially got an OR. you've already replaced everything else that comes on the OR over the sport. I think you're only missing ATRAC, which isn't that big of a deal.

Have you considered getting lockers put under your truck? Sure would be a shame to get all that gearing done just to get your "Monster Truck" stuck on terrain that a factory OR could handle better.

I would also strongly consider buying already assembled thirds (the part that holds the gears) and not trusting the local shade tree mechanic to swap gears if he can't even identify what he's looking at. ECGS has great prices and warranty their work. You can then have your local hillbilly with a crescent wrench install the thirds, or do it yourself. It's pretty easy, lots of youtube how to's out there.

Thanks. Im no stranger to turning wrenches, just new to Tacomas. Ive built both demolition derby and circle track cars for years. The third member idea is a good one! I will look into it for sure. Thank you for your assistance!

You have a pretty good truck as is, I've owned both versions (sport and O/R) and would prefer the sport over the O/R and just throw in air lockers mainly because the sport has an 8.4" rear diff and the O/R has an 8". If you don't want the skewp you could swap it out with another member pretty fast and have some cash on top of it.

No, the 8.4 is the stronger of the two, maybe even as strong as a ford 9". The 8" e-locker is pretty tough though, just not as tough as the 8.4. I average about 40,000 miles on each 8" third (I've been through a few), running 37's and abusing the hell out of it. Like donuts on dry pavement with the locker on type of abuse. Just cruising up the holler slingin' mud that 8.4" will last you a very long time. (I used to live in chuck town).
