I just use Photoshop Elements 7.0. It has a lot of the functionality of Photoshop and can accept some photoshop plugins. It works well for this kind of stuff and it's much less expensive. Photoshop is great if you need it, but if you're just a hobbyist like I am, there's no need for the more expensive program.

You can also download Gimp for free and learn on that.

The polygon lasso tool doesn't try to distinguish colors. It just draws straight lines to wherever you click. With the truck, the lines are mostly straight or gentle curves so it works best for me. The magnetic lasso tool attempts to follow the contours of the colors, which is probably what you're referring to.

Nope, just a hobbyist. Most of my experience came from doing stuff on this site. I learned a lot participating in the Lsocoee "Dog Picture Contest" :)

I was referring to the magnetic lasso. Thanks for clarifying.

Graphic design is not my profession, but I have several years of professional and freelance experience, if that make sense. I had published advertisements, catalogs and even a magazine in the past for my current company, but have moved on to a different position since then. Pretty much used and abused by the company to save a buck from going to a third party marketing consultant.

To date myself a bit, I actually learned off Photoshop 5.5 back in college and ended up with a minor in GD. Recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4.

I blacked out the wheels on the truck picture as well. If you could get some clearer pictures it might look better.
