My brother has a 2007 SR5 Tacoma and it has the "old school" base radio with CD player. What year did they add the big display/bluetooth/navigation stuff? And is that just for the TRD models?

... and its all show. Bluetooth is nice, but 1 CD, lousy sound, poor XM reception, many reported issues so don't get to ga ga over it.

The bluetooth is nice, I can play songs from my iPhone which is pretty cool...but yea, besides that its basically just like a normal radio for me. I dont have that Entune NAV thing.

    Hey Beavis,

How much was that Snugtop? looks like the exact one I want to get, same DCSB as well. Did you get the extra sliding glass window as well (so you have 2?) or just the shell? Any other add-ons inside?

It was actually 2013 when they changed to the touch screen radio, not 2012.

I'm completely happy with mine, best thing about it in my opinion is the hands free calling through bluetooth sync with my cell phone. I also have a USB stick in mine with probably as many songs as my 100 disc home CD changer.

Yes, but in 2013 they added it as standard equipment on all Tacomas. Which I think is what the O.P. was asking. In 2012 you only got it with the upgraded stereo system.

It was actually 2012.5 lol, halfway through the year they added the touchscreen as standard equipment.

Does the non-Entune touchscreen version have an HD Radio tuner too?

I'm still pretty sure that the non-entune touch screen radio was only offered starting in 13 as standard equipment. The entune/nav version was only offered with the upgraded stereo in 12.

I ordered a 13' in October 2012, and every media review out there said that the non-entune standard touchscreen was new for 13. I also test drove two 12's in September 2012 and neither of them had it, unless they were both older. I can't believe that Toyota would change standard equipment in the middle of a production run (2012.5)?

Guess they did change at the end of 2012, odd.

Found this thread using the search:

    2013 Radio/nav question
I'm currently looking real hard at a new tacoma, weather it be a 2012 or the 2013 I'm not sure yet.

My question and concern has to do with the new touch screen radios that are in some of the late 2012 and new 2013 tacomas. How bright are they at night? The wife has expressed concerns that it'll be bright and distracting similar to what my current gps unit is.

I'm sure you can dim the display with the dimmer wheel next to the steering wheel.

Ok, different question since I started the thread....

Does anyone else's display change brightness when you turn on and off the headlights? When I turn the headlights on, the touchscreen display dims considerably. Not a big deal at night, but when it's still somewhat light out, and I have my lights on the display is really hard to read at times.

    Is that normal?

Yes it was made that way. Why run headlights in the day time though?

Well it's not during daytime, more like dawn or dusk. When there is still some light out, but you need your headlights on at that point

that's all i use. i have over 100 of them from back in the 90's when music was still good.

i still buy cd's today whenever an older band i like puts one out.

i used to have an ipod and plugged it in and the sound was horrible. cd sounds so much better.

i've never bought a song on itunes or anywhere in my life. when i had an ipod i just copied all of my cd's to it with my computer.

then again when i was a kid all we had were tapes and i remember 8 tracks and records that my parents still have.

Yeah, I will admit my MP3s through the USB port are deff a lot lower in volume. I just turn it up a little louder though, and don't notice any difference in actual sound quality.

The display does automatically dim when you turn the headlights on.

One reason I would turn my headlights on during the day is because here in PA it's the law while you are going through both active and non-active construction zones. Another reason would be if it's raining heavy and cloudy out, to make your vehicle more noticeable.

mp3's sound fine when using headphones but in a vehicle is where you can really tell a difference in the quality.

in a car an mp3 sounds more like listening to the radio. just not as clear as a cd.
