2nd gen tundra coils on a 1st gen tacoma

I found a really great deal on craigers for a set of 2014 tundra struts and shocks. Ive done some research but have come back with very little info on this kind of conversion. All im wondering is if the will fit on my 2001 tacoma TRD without any major fabrication. If not, i was planning on measuring them and all that when i meet the guy, is there any info about dimensions that i need to know, or anything i should pay attention to in particular to help me determine if they will fit?

 

Short answer: No.


Long Answer: The travel is different. Theres too much tavel on the tundra shocks (too long) and (assuming they fit) you will bottom them out without new bumpstops. I don't know the spring rate/size.

As far as installing, the coil overs would be a bitch to get in. They are way too long and will need to be considerably compressed to fit. It would be comparable to installing 2nd gen Tacoma coils into a 1st gen.

Additional details: For an idea, below are Bilstein 5100 vehicle specs. The 1st Gen Tacoma is not listed so I used the 1st gen Tundra shock specs (comparable to Tacoma's AND interchangable). It would be curious if the 2nd Gen Tundra shocks would work on the 2nd Gen Tacoma. Has an extra 2" of down travel...

Thanks for the detailed reply! well i guess thats out of the question then. what about swapping the springs? my main goal is too keep my lift without using a spacer between the strut and the spring.
my other main goal is not to dump out my wallet on new suspension as long as i dont really really need it haha

Eibach and OME coils are pretty cheap, I'm sure you can find some used suspension well within your budget. Seen a few from lifts sell over the last month.

Ummmm, I run 1st gen Tundra 5100's w/2nd gen OME 883#'s...

 

Why . I like the 1st gen 5100's and will have some soon but only because I want the more aggressive valving. Why would someone want to run 2nd gen Tundra OME's vice Tacoma's (just curious)?

 

the OME 883 is interchangeable between the 1st and 2nd gen Tacomas.

I think 4WD was referring to 2nd gen Tacoma coils on 1st gen Tundra shocks, not 2nd gen Tundra coils.

does anyone know if 2nd gen OR coils will fit 1st gen tacoma 5100's and how much lift they provide if so and? I also assume that the 1.25" setting would be fine with 2nd progressinve springs but would like to know if that is indeed not the case. i have a buddy who just ordered a set of 5100's and im getting some stock coils for my set up so i can bump up to 2.5 and i was gonna give my old coils to my buddy for his 1st gen if it will work. He also has the OR pkg on his 1st gen, if there will be no difference in height, we will just use his coils.

Not sure what specs are but for example I ran 2nd gen. OME 883# coils on my 1st gen

 

While it is true what 4WD said about 883's being able to run on 1st gens, I have never seen a confirmed report of stock 2nd gen coils on a 1st gen tacoma. Just putting it out there. I'm sure Doug has had more experience in this type of suspension experimentation tho.

 

yes sorry if i was unclear that is what i mean. i just thought that since the 2nd gen coils are rated higher they may provide additional lift with no additional compression and or they could be longer coils, just looking for conformation
