filled up with 89 yesterday for the sole reason that that's the only gas that was ethanol free

The 2.7 is still not designed at all for anything higher then 87. The 4.0 is actually designed to run 91, but can detune itself for lower

 

You're gonna wanna disconnect the battery and reset the computer. I just did that and got crap for the first tank of non-ethanol. The second tank really didn't improve mpg at all

 

Yes, R-134a or whatever it's called

 

I can tell you already without a reset my fancy butt dyno says it's faster

Everyone else that doesn't give a fuck about their cars puts 87 in and they last until over 100k. Which is when I'm selling my pig. So I think I'll be alright haha

 

Knock resistant fuel does allow for increased horsepower and torque in the 1GR, though. Since the engine isn't compensating for early ignition (or detonation) it can alter the ignition timing to produce more power. The 4.0 in the Tacoma's is rated for 236HP and 266 lb/ft with 87 Octane, and 239HP and 278 lb/ft with 91 Octane.
So theoretically the truck is faster, but even if that's true I doubt there's any butt dyno's sensitive to pick up on it.

 

I feel like everything I learned while working on track cars is a lie now

 

fuel in the cylinder has to be ignited at the right time, at the right compression, for the engine to work properly

higher octane fuels can be compressed more before ignition

knock is caused by the fuel being ignited at an inefficient time during the stroke cycle

to combat this, usually higher octane fuels can be used to change the detonation point and prevent pre/auto ignition- unless the knock is coming from a bad part

and if that doesnt work and the engine explodes then you probably should have stayed at a holiday inn last night

 

we talked about 4 stroke cycles and internal combustion in my last physics class

I'm not in my automotive classes yet but the shit I learned from working on track cars blew my mind. I know I'm gonna have some spontaneous combustion or something next semester
